i`ve seen one link in which a b.p. spokesman indicated that it was caused by a failed piece of equipment...and he doesn`t know why the equipment failed...

other than this statement,i`ve seen nothing official regarding the cause of the explosion...

given the track record of these rigs and the track record of some environmental wackjobs,it`s not responsible if those questions aren`t addressed...particularly in light of obama sending swat teams to other rigs in the area...

The BOP did not close for some reason. That is the "failed piece of equipment" you mention. I do know that the Emergency Disconnect button was pressed. That should have closed the BOP and sealed the well but it didn't for some reason. There are several speculative reasons why it may not have performed as intended.

What is not responsible is putting blame on something until it is proven. All this media garbage blaming equipment/companies/people is completely irresponsible.

I have to laugh at the "SWAT teams". What an idiot.

i`m no obama fan...but at the time he made this statement,i don`t think anyone knew to an absolute certainty what caused "the explosion"...i don`t think they know yet...

the rig literally sunk into the sea...

i would guess the explosion may have caused the malfunction....supposition on my part...

btw...your link isn`t working...repost if you could...i`m interested in reading as much as possible about this...

gardenweasel,

I don't mean to offend here because this incident has hit me directly, but if you don't know what you are talking about then you shouldn't be speculating.

The explosion was caused by a blowout. It is pretty easy to determine why the explosion happened but that isn't of any concern. The question is why did the blowout happen? Nobody knows the answer to that question yet and if they claim to, they are just another speculating idiot.

Oil drilling can also be considered a dangerous profession. In a split second or by making an incorrect decision you or a coworker could suffer injury or death. In these types of work environments injury are typically very severe if not fatal. Life as an oil driller may not be as dangerous as that of a fisherman but it still has its hazards. Many oil rig workers can make very good money. Some may work on off or on shore rigs. Offshore oil rigs offer a secluded feel like that of a boat, but a perk is that many may have off shore catering. The off shore living quarters are most likely better than most boats as well. They may have access to services that make life a little more bearable. Regardless, the dangers are prevalent in both occupations.

I can't disagree with any of that. But, I have worked in the industry all of my life, been on the rigs (Horizon included) and I can tell you that when you work for Transocean and BP they have one of the most stringent safety environments you could want. There are others that don't have the same safety concern. I hope that all of the lesser operators wake up.

isn`t it true that the offshore oil drilling industry generally has an excellent safety record?.....

look..i`m sure that the obama administration has access to experts that are at least your equal......and in the immedidiate aftermath of the explosion, apparently in their evaluation of the situation there was sufficient reason for them to send swat teams to oil rigs...

you may not like hearing that...but,unfortunately,it`s fact...they didn`t know the cause of the explosion....

i bow to your expertise, but those are the facts..if they knew better, they wasted a shitpot load of money and resources for nothing...

sorry...

and everybody`s bitching out bp for underplaying the potential spill.....sounds from this article that the bp spokesperson was very concerned while the coast guard`s honcho was claiming that there wasn`t going to be a major spill....

sounds like the coast guard was mistaken in their assessment...

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Eco/oil-r...ard-no-oil-spill-sunken-rig/story?id=10455646

here come the congressional hearings

Don't be so sure garden.

I cringe every time I watch a news report on TV. You would think that they would enlist someone who knew what they are talking about but it is evident that they haven't.

I watched one of the early news reports with my wife and she made logical comments based on what she saw on the news. However, her comments were idiotic in reality.

You should be more careful when you use the word "fact".

Please tell me what you think the "facts" are and I will tell you if you are correct or not. I guarantee you that I will give you an honest yes, no or nobody knows yet.

I wouldn't BS in a situation like this.
