What I hate about the Super Bowl......

I give this tirade each year, but here it is again.

This is the NFL's showcase game. The gem stone in the collection. The one time when the whole nation, if not several nations........watches this sport. It is truely a "party atmosphere". As such, why has the NFL still not moved this game to Saturday?

It makes absolutely no sense that this game is played on a Sunday evening, instead of Saturday. None. Nada. Zilch. Now, you can stick "tradition" right up your All-American ass. The NFL sold out tradition 10 times over, years and years ago. They sold to the networks, and they made a mint!!!

Remember when we only had 1pm and 4pm starts? Networks wanted the late games moved back a bit so the early game could finish. Pete Rozelle was pretty sure that a game should finish in three hours.......No deal. Remember when the Super Bowl was played earlier in the day? Well......trust me. It was.

But, slowly things changed. Games starting times altered for sponsors (and gamblers.....don't kid yourself!), and the League even decided to have games on Thursday on a regular basis.

Well, since they have "tweaked" tradition so much, why not do the right thing? Do what almost EVERY fan would love! Make the Super Bowl a Saturday night game, so we can all party all night.......we can all sleep the next day........we can all get to work on Monday!

I'm pretty sure more people would watch the ENTIRE game, and feel good about doing it.

But yeah I agree.....and I think Cowherd did a rant on this a few weeks ago.........the lost time at work on Monday after the SB cost millions and millions.....from people not showing up, hungover or talking about it and the commercials for hours at work.......

start time of 3 pm pacific/6 pm eastern is not exactly an all night party

people would still be talking about the game and commercials on monday, whether the game is on sat or sun

and i think everyone who works in corporate america knows, productivity is a very nebulous word.

look at all the "lost productivity" on a daily basis to people posting on message boards like this one every single day during working hours. a majority of posters only post from work

if everyone worked at a truly productive pace we would have 12 hr work weeks, not 40. the motivation is just not there, but thats another subject for a different time

You miss the entire point of that. A lot of people WANT to be able to party all night, and when you have to get up for work the next day, it isn't very practical. When the game ends at 10:30 on the east coast, don't you think it would be nice if it was a Saturday night, and people could whoop it up a little, instead of go right to bed? :shrug:

i guess the reason i like it on sunday is because i like having sat to do whatever i want, and go out all night if i want to, and then have plenty of time to sleep in and then as i'm recovering i get to eat alot of good food and watch the most hyped game of the year.

I wonder if part of it has to do with the fact that Saturdays are traditionally the day people watch the least TV, so the NFL would worry the ratings would suffer.

one more thing, championship games are on sundays or mondays (NCAA b and f ball)

if its moved, its more likely to move to monday night as opposed to sat

Good point yyz. Saturday makes a lot more sence.

If it has to be on Sunday move the kickoff up an hour or so. Parties are over by half time around here.

i agree that's what is....people traditionally go out on saturday night, while sunday evening people stay home & watch tv...

If that were the case, the NFL would never have ANY Saturday night games, would they? I believe they do just fine with the playoff games they have on those nights, and they certainly wouldn't schedule regular season games on Saturday nights if they thought it was "bad for bidniz".

You gonna miss the Super Bowl if they move it to Saturday night? I highly doubt it. In fact.......I think you'll have a better time.

Sunday evening is rotten for a parties, which is why most people hold their soirees, fetes and other wingdings on Friday or Saturday. The weekend is over; for most people, school or work looms the next morning.

So why not move the Super Bowl -- our national party -- to Saturday starting next year?

Most of us could sleep in the next morning and have the whole day to recover from any game-related overindulgences. Hosts would have Sunday to clean up from their Saturday night Super Bowl parties. The TV networks would get a viewing bonanza on a night when TV viewership is usually low. Fans would have one less day of the now-interminable two-week build-up between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. Employers would not have to deal with reportedly high rates of PSBM (Post-Super Bowl Monday) "illness."Others have floated this idea (see here and here and here and here and here and here for instance), and the arguments against it that I've been able to fathom or glean aren't persuasive:

Tradition!

Having an excuse to blow off work on PSBM is part of the fun.

It would sap any energy there might be from the movement to have PSBM declared a federal holiday.

Host cities like that extra day of tourism.

Saturday nights always pose more potential social conflicts than Sunday nights; the total audience for the game might therefore drop.

How about starting the season earlier or eliminate the bye week and that annoying two week gap between the AFC/NFC championship games and the SB and then the game could be played on the Sunday before Martin Luther King day........OR move everything back and have the Super Bowl on the Sunday before Presidents' day....this way most people are off the following day. Just a thought.

Love this debate! If the Superbowl is America's holiday, then it should get an official holiday on the calendar!

Congress should pass a law making Monday after Super Sunday a National holiday. Every city in America could have a parade, and families could take their kids to the park, picnic, and toss the footballs (or snowballs) around...or just look at the floats. The tape of the game could be replayed on TV, so folks that missed it (or the commercials) could see it.

After all, as others have said here already, NO WORK GETS DONE ON MONDAY ANYWAY.

The only bad thing about the superbowl is its the last meaningful football for 8 months.:sadwave:

As for Saturday......not a bad idea, but it assumes the NFL cares about the little guy.
Most of the corporate/sponsor types are not going to work on Monday, for them Sunday is work.

I guess theres also tradition. H.S. on Friday, College on Saturday and Pro's on Sunday.

I couldn't agree more. Perhaps we should start an online petition and se nd it to the NFL. We probably would get millions to sign. I've been bitching about this for years and have not heard ONE person disagree. By the time the game's over, it's bed time.
