What is with all the cheating at the Olympics?

well put marine. Some people just don't understand. I feel like I'm discussing strategy with Amato when he was at State. No strategy...just "attack attack attack"....we see where that got him. Lose Lose Lose....lol.

I am sorry, I didn't realize you didn't understand what I was saying. There are rules of fair play that the badminton teams broke and were subsequently disqualified for breaking those rules, or more easily put, cheating.
I guess this is where it get's really complicated. Once they are eliminated, they cannot win. Can't win a battle or a war if you don't stand and fight, period. They took a chance and lost. So by being eliminated from the competition you still stand by the notion that they did the right thing in order to win? Get eliminated, that's winning?

Hopefully, this is more clear to you now. They aren't competing for anything except a window seat home. They didn't stand and fight, so they never won a battle or a war. A very poor metaphor for this instance by the way.

So you are saying the rules state they must "play to win" no matter the situation and its sort of a judgement call if they are significantly playing to lose?

Thanks and sorry if anything got heated in the thread. I hate to see teams intentionally throw games but it happens in different ways. Like someone mentioned, NFL teams rest players. Look at Spain this year in basketball. It was an exhibition but they said they didn't want to show everything they had vs USA.

The main difference is that the players on the field are trying to win but at the end of the day, the team isn't putting forth the effort to win.

I was being a smart ass man sorry. I agree with the Spain thing and I do understand the seeding that goes on as I am a hockey fan and that shit happens all the time. I don't think it should happen at the Olympics ever, but you are right about the rules. The Badminton rules do allow for it as far as it is not an elimination tournament in the early rounds but they should not have to be told to compete to the best of their abilities when they play badminton for gosh sakes. I mean this is the one time they pull a large audience and they give them five straight serves into the net?? Both teams trying to lose at the same time? In the Oplympics? Glad they are gone to be honest with you bro.

I get what you're saying. It is a disappointment and kind of stupid - but I can't find a -rule- that they broke.

The Badminton World Federation announced its ruling after investigating two teams from South Korea and one each from China and Indonesia. It punished them for "not using one's best efforts to win a match" and "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport" in matches Tuesday night.

Seems they were DQ'ed for being douchebags. But not cheating or rulebreaking.

And the NFL is just like this set up in the olympics. The NFL regular season is the pool play, and the playoffs is a single elimination bracket. Change the names, and it's the same thing.

Either way I won't lose sleep over it but I know almost nothing about badmitton. I do hate to see them eliminated. It should have just come down to which team could successfully lose and then move on and try to change the format next time around.

I guess if Denver starts off 14-0.....if Manning doesn't play the next 2 games, then they get eliminated from the postseason. Sounds fair...

No....but I also don't like the draft order b/c there can be a conflict of interest. I like the draft lottery but do understand its good to give the worst teams higher picks so maybe weighted lottery is best way to go.

That said, your analogy is sort of like apples/oranges. If it could help them win in the current year, then I'd be ok with it.

When I said "lose the battle but win the war" I am referring to the current war. The only thing I'd be in favor of in that regard...is that if you are mathematically eliminated and wanted to give younger players more experience....might cost you in the current season but you are trying to legitimately improve.

Even then though, it can create a higher draft pick which I don't think is necessarily fair.
