GOP Leaders Seek Probe of Berger Papers

WASHINGTON

A group of House Republicans called Wednesday for a congressional investigation into the improper handling of classified documents by President Clinton's national security adviser, Sandy Berger.
Berger admitted last year that he deliberately took classified documents out of the National Archives in 2003 and destroyed some of them at his office. He pleaded guilty in federal court to one charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material and was fined $50,000.

Ten lawmakers led by House Armed Services Chairman Duncan Hunter, R- Calif., and Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., released a letter calling for the House Government Reform Committee to investigate.

They asked the committee to determine whether any documents were missing from Clinton administration terrorism records, to review security measures for classified documents and to seek testimony from Berger.

Hunter's spokesman, Joe Kasper, said the Justice Department had asked Congress to hold off on any oversight until the legal case concluded.

"It's important that the House conduct its own review to ensure there is a clear understanding of the facts, and sensitive and highly classified security information is not potentially compromised in the future," Kasper said.

Berger's lawyer, Lanny Breuer, did not immediately return a call for comment. A spokesman for the Government Reform Committee said the panel was reviewing the letter.

At issue is a strange sequence of events in which Berger admitted to sneaking classified documents out of the National Archives in his suit, later destroying some of them and then lying about it. The Bush administration disclosed the investigation in July 2004, just days before the Sept. 11 commission issued its final report.

During Berger's sentencing hearing Breuer characterized Berger as eager to get the facts of the Sept. 11 attacks right when he took the material, which contained information relating to terror threats in the United States during the 2000 millennium celebration.

Now some good news for Dems--Have always thought of Colonel Hunt on Fox as a straight shooter--interesting to hear his take on Rumsfeld

"Colonels' Corner: Fire Him Three Years Ago!

Do we care at all that over 24, 000 U.S. military men and women have been killed or wounded in Iraq while Rumsfeld has been in charge? Do we care that single-handedly, this guy has taken a great victory ? given to him by our great soldiers in Iraq ? and mismanaged that victory into an insurgency (which he denied for months)? Not to mention sectarian violence ? whatever the hell that is ? which will eventually lead into a full scale Civil War, at least in the Sunni Triangle?

Do we care that this guy did not care enough to sign hundreds of letters to survivors of lost soldiers, that he allowed a machine to be used instead?

Do we care that in the time since we conquered the Taliban in Afghanistan, the raw opium produced in Afghanistan has increased over 100 percent? I do not blame this guy for the fact that we are largest users of heroin on the planet, but I do lay at his feet this massive uncontrolled increase in the production of heroin. Maybe we do not care about that either.

In my adult life, I have witnessed the absolute loss of any accountability or responsibility by public figures, for any mistake, no matter how heinous. No wonder the same clowns who never saw 9/11 coming were still in charge when WMD was not found in Iraq.

By not firing this guy, we send a message: It's okay to ignore every bit of professional advice, and it's okay to refuse to see the truth, even when it is shown to us every day. We're saying that it's okay to fire generals for daring to disagree with you, and it's okay to mismanage a war and cost soldiers their lives.

By not firing this guy, by keeping him in his job for six years, his boss now owns his mistakes. At some point, as boss, you have to take responsibility for what you don't do as well as what you do. If you keep the guy on, then you own him and all that he has done and failed to do. In the military ? and now, I am learning, in business as well ? that's how it works. So it seems to me that the president now owns all of Rumsfeld's mistakes (Politically speaking, that is, if I was going to speak politically, which we all know I do not).

Yes, we should fire Donald Rumsfeld; we should have fired him three years ago ? unless, of course, none of this matters to Americans. Wait, I know! Rather than fire him, why not give him ? wait for it ? The Medal of Freedom?

Hmm, isn't this one interesting. Berger commits a crime, and...

He pleaded guilty in federal court to one charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material and was fined $50,000.

Now, republicans want to have an investigation into what secrets he may have hidden or info he kept from the public during the crime. I guess it is important - depending on the situation or who it is - to not have secrecy and hidden information.

Let me think, is there another administration that might be operating in, and expanding, secrecy and hiding information for reasons we don't know?

Dealing with the issue at hand, personally, I guess I don't care if they investigate him. I guess it depends on why and if it would help us moving forward in this "terror war". I just find it quite interesting how they can spin this one. The man plead guilty, he paid the price for it. A drastic change from the current mode of operation. Just think what the democratically-controlled congress and senate might be able to look into if they took over in November? Dare to dream, baby.

Since you tossed out a generous nugget, Wayne, I will give you one...I think Reid is as dirty as they come...I think he will be going down hard in the very near future, with the help of some of your minions...

I'll tell you one thing...I'll bet there are a lot of very worried dirty politicians these days. I do think we as voters do have a chance to start to affect change. It will take a lot of work, of course, but we have to start sending a message when dirt is dirt.

Your absolutely correct Chad -- If one is a politician their chances of being corrupt is about 90%.

I think it would be enlightening if they put out a list of every congressmans prior job description before entering politics.

Is amazing what wealth one can accumulate via politics. Don't know of any other profession where one will spend huge sums of their own money to aquire $60,000 a year job.:)
