What type of snake did I just kill?

Yes, that is an ex-copperhead, poor thing! Tho it is a venomous pit viper, I believe only one person in American history has ever been killed by a copperhead bite.
You shoulda caught it live and sent it to me. Need more of them around my property to eat mice and the frikkin' loud frogs...

I know it's just muscle reflexes but he was all over the place after the first chop so I gave him a few more shots for good measure.
If didn't have small boys I would have tried to release him. At three and one I can't teach them just to leave it be as they want to grab him. If thy were older it would have been a different outcome.

They can be pretty aggressive. Looks like this one didn't put up much of a fight but that is one you don't want going to the judges anyway, if you know what I mean. You bad ass you.

You looked that viper right in it's slit pupils, shat yourself with fright and maybe whined a little bit, and turned back from your high stepping, arms down elbows up and hands out to the side, shrieking retreat.
Then, with withering machismo and wavering step, you make it to the shed and grab your weapon. Adrenaline desperately trying to win the battle between right and a woman like fright, you return to the fray and strike a mighty blow, then another, and another.

I was stringin barb wire across a perimeter pond...someone yelled "snake"...5 of us jumped out faster than Superman on speed.
10 or so grenades later, problem solved, Cobra.
We had a detachment of UDT guys in the Mekong Delta, (Nam Can) they had a pet Python, must have been 16-18 foot long, they fed it live chickens they bought from the locals...poor snake fried in the sun one day when they forgot to put up the shade canopy one day.
These UDT guys were really super bad-ass, went out well armed at sunset in a skiff with twin 427 engines, came back at dawn, "mission" accomplished...
I happened to witness the results of a mission that went badly, they once helo landed into the middle of what turned out to be a trap, VC opened up on them with shotguns. Upon their return to base, NOT a pretty site..
To this day I am solidly opposed to sending our troops in harms way for political whim.
Plus I have a very healthy respect for snakes.....:0008

Make sure you bury the head.. it's the venomous part that stays venomous after death. Nothing to be messed with. :scared

Similarity of patterns causes some to confuse it with the copperhead; however, the copperhead lacks any pattern on the head. Tail rattling may also lead some to mistake it for a rattlesnake,

Most definitely a copperhead. I have considerable experience with these taxa. I can tell at a moment's glance the difference between an Agkistrodon and a colubrid. The way you are taught to key out the difference is the "V" or "Y" patch eastern corn snakes have on their necks, which the copperhead is lacking. But to someone like myself, who has seen literally hundreds of these animals, the triangle shaped head, body look and color/patterns of the copperhead is instantly unmistakable.
Mailing a snake is fun! Tho not allowed by by postal service or UPS. But many folks still do without telling. Airplane freight companies, like Delta Dash, just ship such animals for zoos and longstanding commerical accounts nowadays.
I used to send salamanders very successfully thru the mail in winter - just put'em in a gallon plastic jug with a bit of water. Tho that was for collectors who wanted them as pets - it is really not good habitat husbandry to release a species from one geolocation to another, even if the same species occurs in both areas.
Yes, with kids around it the best thing for most folks is to kill the venomous animals. Herpetologist friends of mine, being more concerned with the animals than the average parent, would never kill the snakes, but teach and discipline thier kids, while maintaining ever constant vigilance. And do the occasional (local) relocating.
