What would it be reasonable to charge in this instance?

What is it reasonable to charge to drive a big u-haul from california to georgia 2150 miles. Not a friend so that is out of equation. I am sure some of you wouldnt do it for any amount of money, but I have someone wanting me to and I dont really know what would be a fair price. For the record I dont really like driving, but there are certain states/spots that I would like to see and since I am out of work for the summer(teacher) I got the time:) so why not see things and get paid. What do ya think a fair price for both of us would be. Just driving the truck, no loading or unloading. All other expenses would be taken care of by them(truck, gas, plane ticket and all other moving expenses)

Thanks Guys

That would be $750 if my math is right. My initial thoughts were $1000:shrug: What do you mean by 500 mile a day minimum.

so you don't take 10 days to get there, or 20. if they will give you $1000, take it. i think you can hire companies for less than that but i don't really know. i think a lot of truckers get .30/.35 a mile is what i based it on but i could be way off. they have little signs on the back of the trucks saying .33 per mile.

how are you gettting back

Gotcha, that makes sense in order to get your stuff delivered by a certain time. You may be right about companies doing it for less I dont know since it is already packed, a quick google with packing and all looked like some movers were getting 4 grand plus for this type of trek:scared Course they are probably carrying china as apposed to chinet:D BTW they are purchasing my flight.

I am kinda thinking the same thing as long as they dont want to follow and stay together on the trip. Woul like to make my own time but still make it in 4 days or so.

Very true. I think I am going to do a little research and see what the truck and gas will set them back before I decide.

My feelings? You aren't a pro, and that's the reason they are hiring you. You can't charge like a pro.

If I did something like this, I would not settle for less than I make per hour on my actual job.

Your situation is different, since you want to sight-see.

Taking this in to consideration, I would actually scale back my price. (After all, you are now "taking your time", and inconveniencing the client.)

Since you are looking to get paid for a vaction of sorts, you should treat it as such, IMO.

Not sure I would call it a vacation since I will be driving a truck for 36 hours in only a few days and not really be able to leave the road but I get your point.

Said I would do it for $800. I fugure I will be out of pocket $100 or so for food and stay, $50 or so for energy drinks, leaving me with $650 to lose at the shreveport casinos on my way in. Good Times:)

As long as they have no beef with you taking an extra day or two to squeeze in what you might want to do......why not?

You did say they were picking up your rooms and food, so that's part of your "pay", too.

As long as you think of it along the lines of you're getting paid to do something you want to do anyway, the money might just be considered a "perk"!

Sorry. I understood from the first post that everything was picked up as far as expenses went.

Hell, if you dump $100 a day on food and a room, now I think you're getting screwed!

man, just imagine...trucks already packed, THEY cant dont want to drive, request someone else to drive who hasnt packed the truck.........

somewhere on the back roads of Bumblefuck....

OFFICER: "so Mr. UGA you say you have no idea whats on that box in the back huh?"

UGA: "No Sir, Im just doing a friend or neighbor a favor and getting paid pretty well by what most said when I inquired about it"

OFFICER: "would you mind placing your hands behind your back, we're gonna have to detain you until the owners of this marijuana come pick it up and verify your story, or until you make bail"

UGA: "BWAAAHHHHHHH":sadwave:

Personally now aday, I dont drive or carry any luggage or vehicle that I havent packed or own, now of course this is far fetched but never do FAVORS for someone whom you mentioned isnt a friend, DO IT FOR THE MONEY!!! You charged $800 for the trek and hope it goes well, I would of had them make me an offer to see what they thought of the items in tow....no way I'd do a favor of driving for 35 hours when its not my family or a dear friend and worry about over charging....if you want to open a service repeating this act, nice work...they should spread the word of how fair your prices are. Good luck on the trip and hopefully you make some cash at the casino since they are getting over on ya a little. That drive is a $1500 minimum trip and I'd be gunning for $2K...lots of responsibilities and plenty of assholes to avoid on the road in that travel distance. GOD forbid but if the items in tow arrived at the destination destroyed, broke or missing.....you think they will take it easy on you?

:mj07: Yeah I know what you mean, but I fully plan on inspection before leaving out. As far as the mony goes, if I was doing it just for the money then I agree, 1200 would sound better, but truthfully I would like to see some parts of America I never have and dont mind sacrificing a little cash in order to do it.

$800 might be too low if you are paying for your own Hotel. Probably at least 4 days driving if you are doing a little sightseeing and that still would be about 9 hours a day driving...
