What would you do if you were in my situation?

The last week of Nov 2006, I had a new roof put on my home. A local contractor who did my neighbors home did a find job and I was able to claim hail dammage. He rushed me in do to the fact my son wanted Christmas lights up. I recieved payment from my insurance company promptly and this guys told me he would give me a heck of a deal if I took care of him on some golf equipment.

Anyway, I called several days after the job and left a voicemail telling him how wonderful the roof looked and asked how much I owed. I never singed any type of contract. About a month later, I called again and got voicemail asking about settlement. It's now been 6 months and I've heard nothing back at all. I don't know how contractors work. Am I gonna get a bill ? Did I get lost in the shuffle? I would have to think at this point he either forgot about me, or assumes it's been paid. I feel as though I should call him one last time, but my wife is telling me NO! Should I pay this guy if he ever calls, or just move on and consider myself lucky?

Thanks in advance...

If you tried to contact them once, you've done your part. Maybe the company went belly up or the dude kicked off.

Hope you don't need him down the road for anything. (if he's not already accepted the barter)

If anything goes wrong later, who cares, blame the wife.

Sounds like this is bothering you. The old saying is what comes around goes around. Make an effort to contact the guy. If he doesn't call back you tried after all it has been 6 months.

I know for a fact he didn't go belly up or actually die.... Some friends of ours asked who did our work and I recommended him. His crew came out and gave them an estimate, so I know there still in business...

As for the golf equipment Steve, I'm not sure...He never said what he was in the market for. I run a golf shop..

Go find the guy and pay him or let him say it is settled. Do the right thing. It can't be that hard to find the guy. He does you a favor and now you are trying to weasel around and get out of paying him cause you left him a message? WTF is wrong with you people? You owe the man, find him and pay him, he is prob not too worried about it since it is off the books and will be expecting his Golf equip soon, or maybe he is so happy with all the referrals you sent he is calling it even. Either way, quit being a bitch and go pay the man what you owe, geezus!!

Ut oh you seem to be slipping a little already. Agent he made two attempts to reach the guy and you make him into a bad guy like its his fault?
Mully, maybe you should just go look for the guy because it looks like this is gonna be on the back of your mind until it is settled. I would probably be the same way. I can't imagine what kind of stuff you could have done for him that would be equal to the roof but possible he is very happy for what you did and is calling it even. If he really needed the money or wanted it he would be at your door.

I had not done my daily affirmation yet this morning. The old Agent reared his ugly head. I apologize....

The right thing to do is find the man and settle up.

no the right thing to do is for this contractor to conduct himself like a professional & know who owes him money. mully tried contacting the guy a few times already....do you want him to take out an ad in the local newspaper ?

mully...

i have been in this position a few times myself....& after trying to contact the contractors a few times to no avail, i put the money aside & wait for the contractor to get to me.if he does it's his, if he doesn't that's his problem.

Why bother to start the thread? You aren't going to pay him no matter what we all say, right?

Wrong. I'm an honest person. If this guy shows up at my house or a bill comes tomorrow, the check will be in the mail that day. I just think it's bad business on his or their part. What if you contacted Mizuno and one of their sales reps you didn't know stopped by your home one day. You let him know you were very interested in buying a set of irons and you were given a brand new set of Mizunos to demo. You were told if you hit them well and wanted to buy them he would take care of you and give you a good deal. You go out and shoot 4 under par and don't miss a green with them. Having nothing but a business card, you call this guy after the round is completed and leave a voice mail about how happy you are with the clubs and ask how much you owe. Being a busy man, a few weeks go by and you realize you haven't recieved a call back. You make another call and get voice mail once again. This time you say it's been a few weeks and I haven't heard back from you. I still love the clubs and need to know what I owe you for settlement. Please give me a call back, and you leave your number. Now several more weeks pass and still no call back. You tell your wife and she says, hey you have tried to pay the man, I'm sure he will contact you for the money. He's not going to give the clubs away....6 MONTHS go by and still nothing! As life goes on you can't believe it's been that long.

I'm just saying...I have the money to pay him, but do I really need to contact him again? Some have said what comes around goes around, maybe this is my come around...I don't know. My wife is telling me no way in hell should I call him again and It sure would be nice to get that new set of clubs so to speek...

If it's your conscience bothering you then send him a registered letter and keep a copy. If he doesn't respond then just forget about it. This way if he ever tries coming after you legally you now have proof you tried to contact him.

the contractor doesn't have a legal leg to stand on unless he can prove that mully has tried to avoid paying him....which he hasn't.
