Ditka seems to be doing a lot for these guys. A lot of them have no health insurance and no income. I think the NFL can peel off some of that $$ and take better care of these ol timers.

Ex-UM and NFL star Otto loses right leg

NAPA, Calif. Hall of Fame center Jim Otto recently had his right leg amputated and is recovering in a hospital in Utah.

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis made the announcement Wednesday.

Otto, 69, has had a litany of health problems. The University of Miami alumnus, who graduated in 1960, has had prostate cancer, two major infections that nearly killed him and approximately 40 operations ? mostly on his banged-up knees from playing football.

"It's been, as you know with him, a tremendous fight," Davis said. "He's lived through it now for three years, day in and day out. But it finally came. He fought the amputation. He didn't want it. He fought it. But there was no other thing to do but to amputate.":scared

Otto played with the Raiders from 1960-74 and is currently the team's director of special projects.

Otto was a member of the original Raiders of 1960. He played in nine AFL All-Star games and the first three AFC-NFC Pro Bowls.
