i am a die hard yankees fan now living in south florida. can some one please explain to me why they are so intent on giles when the marlins are basically giving away juan pierre. he seems to me to be the missing piece to their batting order. he would address the center field position and would give us a leadoff hitter who can steal bags. they havent won a title since knoblauch and jeter hit 1 -2. we need jeter back in the 2 hole and start playing real baseball.

i also heard they are going hard after kyle farnsworth. they are having a hard time convincing anyway to set up for riviera.

any way if anyone has any new news please pass along.

thanks guys

NEW YORK -- Yankees manager Joe Torre said Monday the club is keeping its options open for its pressing need of a center fielder, including the possible use of one of its two All-Star-caliber shortstops, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.

Torre said he has considered the merits of converting either shortstop Jeter or AL MVP Rodriguez, who has been playing third base since joining the Yankees, but has not raised the subject with either of his star players.

"We've thought about it," Torre said. "We just haven't made a commitment to that. We haven't broached it with the shortstops."

The Yankees, eliminated in the first round of the playoffs this season by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, are looking to replace 37-year-old Yankee lifer Bernie Williams, who slipped to 12 homers and 64 RBI last season.

Williams, a former batting champion, hit .249 and has been on the decline defensively in the last couple of seasons.

Echoing a scenario laid out by general manager Brian Cashman, Torre said the Yankees might decide to forgo the free-agent route and go with their own light-hitting defensive specialist, Bubba Crosby, in center field.

If Jeter moves to center field, it would leave open the possibility of Rodriguez sliding to the left in the infield to take Jeter's place.

"That's happened before, hasn't it?" Torre said about converting a power-hitting infielder into an outfielder. "Bobby Murcer, Mickey Mantle. Hank Aaron came up as a second baseman. Robin Yount went to center field.

"It certainly is a consideration."

Torre said he did not think it would take Rodriguez or Jeter very long to get accustomed to the outfield and that after spring training, either one could do a good job if moved. Though he stressed that such a dramatic position switch was wishful thinking, he said he did not doubt that the two stars would do what was in the Yankees' best interest if asked.

"Jeter would do anything and so would A-Rod for that matter, to help this ballclub win," Torre said.

The reporter left out some quotes from Torre and kept pressing the issue. Torre also said Mariano Rivera was there best center fielder. You know how the papers are. I'll believe it when i see it.

the yankees need to go and get Juan Pierre. he is by no means washed up. down here in south florida they think he has lost his desire to play. he would give the yanks everything they need. he can lead off and set the table for jeter and the gang and can roam center like no one else has in recent years.
farnsworth was a very good move considering their is not much out there. no they need a couple more middle relief arms and they will be in good shape.

get ready for the yankees to make a big splash this week. they are getting close to make a trade for tori hunter. they seem to be content with jeter at the leadoff spot that is why they left pierre alone. he is a average fielder with a weak arm so they are going with bubba crosby if they cant make a trade.

they have some options in going after hunter, maybe gathright from tampa and the latest rumor i heard was sending pavano to seattle for jody reed. we turned him down 2 years then seattle offerred him to us for contreras. i was just talking to joe torres nephew. he is my neighbor and he is the one who told me about tori hunter. he said they are just trying to keep things quiet. he also told me the 2 players they got from cincy are actually pretty good. the secondbaseman is a young stud so look for the yankees to package him and pavano. maybe abreau from philly . they are calling us about pavano.

lets keep our fingers crossed and hope george opens his wallet for the holidays.

i dont' know what is with all the hype about kyle farnsworth. WHat has he really done. Yanks freaked out imo bc gordan left and didn't know who was going to setup. Then they did what they always did, get the over hyped, over paid player based on Potential. Yanks fans will not be happy when Farnsworth blows like 6-8 games this season in the seventh or eighth inning.

I'm a Yankees fan also...but neither Pierre nor Giles is the answer for our CF situation, true Pierre may be able to steal bags...but he doesn't get on base enough...plus he doesn't have a great arm, which is the main thing we're trying to address...I think we can trade for a CF during the season...while making do with Bubba for the 1st half the season...I think we'll be fine, we just need someone to catch the ball in CF, and Bubba can certainly do that.

wow that stench of bullsh*t is really growing stronger by the day... never knew joe torre was so close to his "nephew" and that he leaked trade secrets to him. sounds normal tho
