Just read an oral history about the 'mats a few weeks ago. In the center of the book there is a picture of them playing at a bar in Iowa City, circa 1984. I was there...:D

That's awesome ... you're lucky. I didn't get to see them until much later (opening for Tom Petty, of all people). By then, they'd pretty much lost their way. It looked like Tommy was having a hard time staying awake. :sadwave:

And Bob Stinson had already been kicked out of the band by then, right? But he was still alive then, I think...
They talk about that tour in the book I mention here. As you say, its was all but over for them by then.
With the 'Mats being from Minneapolis, they and the other Twin Cities bands of that time--Soul Asylum and Husker Du for the most part--always seemed to be touring the Midwest playing college towns.
One time we road-tripped to Decorah(Luther College) to see the 'Mats on a Friday night then saw them back home on Saturday.
Had the luck to see the 'Mats 8 times between '84 and '88 when I graduated from college. Crazy(and hazy) days, indeed.

Yeah, Bob was long gone from the band by then. I think you're right that he was still alive ... if not, I'm sure he was rolling over in his grave as they went through the motions (barely) the night I saw them. I'll have to pick up that book ... I haven't read much about them other than the chapter in
Our Band Could Be Your Life (which you should check out if you haven't already) ... thanks for the link!

Not that Slim Dunlop can't handle a guitar, though..

LOVED "Our band could be your life" saw a LOT of the bands mentioned in that book. Actually own a copy-- Black Flag blew me away every time I saw them. Glad to see Henry Rollins is still angry and pissed off--his show on IFC is great.
I was a bit disappointed in the book...its really is just an oral history--just fans reminiscing about their memories of the band--a lot of it from the early days in Minneapolis before anyone had ever heard of them--very little from the band members themselves. Worth checking out of the library if yours has a copy, which is where I found it. If not, just buy the cheapest used copy you can find...

Best album is 'Before These Crowded Streets' by DMB.

though curious why before crowded streets is the album--as IMO "crash" and "Under the table" were well, better albums.

curious your take s'all--respectfully

Don't really have a #1, but if I was stuck on a deserted island and could only have one album:

either

Bob Marley- Legend

or

The Who- Tommy
