Wheel Covers question

I realize how novice this question is, but I've never had to deal with it before. I am still driving a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am and will be until I secure my teaching job hopefully this summer or fall. I may keep the car for a while after that, depending on how far I have to drive. All four of the wheel covers have come off and with everything going on this year I have not taken the time to replace them. It's really bugging me, as I look like someone preparing to knock off a gas station every time I gas up, and I want to get some new ones for the vehicle.

The question is, will most any 15-inch wheel cover work for my car? The original wheel covers for this model had lug nut covers (5) that helped secure the covers, and I know they make the replacement models that will require these lug nut covers. I think there are two usual cover models for this car, but when I look around there are many options that supposedly will work for any 15-inch wheel.

Anyone with any specific knowledge or experience with this? I found some nice looking models that reportedly work with my model car that also use the lug nut covers and are just $10 apiece on E-bay, and I'd have to buy the lug nut covers for an additional $20-$30 somewhere else. But the usual factory replacement wheel covers run about $20-$30 more most places I've found online. And the bigger question is, will most of the advertised wheel covers from places that supposedly fit my car model specifically work, and I wouldn't need the lug nut covers if the other covers work?

Thanks for any input on this. I'm kind of embarrassed I don't know this - my dad owned and operated a full service gas station when I was growing up and he dealt with this stuff all the time. I clearly didn't learn enough valuable lessons from him growing up... sad.

Sorry, Chad, but I can't help with your question.

By the way, based on what I've read from you on this site, it is clear that you learned plenty of valuable lesson from your father through the years.

Chad, go out and look what you have.....you're talking about lug nut covers etc.

You have a tire and a rim...with no hub caps correct?

If so check your tire size and go to Walmart and pick up wheel covers. Bang them on and you're good to go.

Go to a junk yard, they will put them on your car for 50 cents on the dollar.

Good advice, or hit the C/List in your area, at least you are trying to BUY them, some of the folks here in C/bus would just lift them two at a time from a dark street or a dealers lot!

the bottomline from my viewpoint is, hey it's a 2005 and $20 invested in used wheel covers, would buy you 6 gallon of gasoline.

More importantly, how is your coolant, and if this is a V-6 they are notorious for blown head gaskets, better to change the coolant if over 4-5 year old or been 80K plus miles since changed.

Cosmetic is second mechanical is first priority.

Glad to answer more, GM is my specialty, even though Pontiac is no longer building excitement.

Tin Indians and Super Duty's, and GTO's,... forever ! :0074

Thanks for all the input guys. My question dealt specifically with the wheel covers/hubcaps that should/would go on the wheels. The Grand Am has wheel covers that require additional lug nut covers over the base lug nuts that hold the wheel covers on. Essentially you have the wheels with lug nuts, then the hubcaps, then the lug nut covers that secure the hubcaps. I didn't know if this was necessary, or if any 15 inch cover would work, based on the wheel. Again, sorry if this is a stupid question. Sounds like I can get any 15 inch (this is the size of my wheel) covers and just bang them on. I figured someone would know here, for sure, I just didn't want to buy something either way and have what I got be wrong and have to do it again.

Cie: thanks very much for the comment. I did learn a lot from my father - mainly how to be nice to people and treat people fairly.

GENO: Thanks for your advice. I have been "religious" in changing fluids, oil, coolant, etc. on my car. Currently has 158K miles and have never had a serious issue - pending the knocking on wood here...

Should check junkyards, I suppose. That's one thing my dad would have done... for sure.
