Facing renewed criticism from the Obama campaign and new questions about his offshore investments in recent reports, Mitt Romney said on Monday that his offshore investments were managed by a blind trust and he had no knowledge of their whereabouts.:142smilie :SIB

"I don?t manage them," he said in an interview with Radio Iowa's O. Kay Henderson. "I don?t even know where they are. That trustee follows all U.S. laws. All the taxes are paid, as appropriate. All of them have been reported to the government. There?s nothing hidden there. If, for instance, you own shares in Renault or Fiat, you still have to disclose that in the United States."

The assets in Romney's financial disclosures are kept either in blind trusts, with lawyer Bradford Malt serving as a trustee, or retirement accounts, according to a recent Vanity Fair article. The trusts, however, have some investments in firms with ties to the Romneys. The article also investigated Romney's now closed Swiss Bank account and as much as $30 million held in the Cayman Islands, from which the Romney campaign says he derives no tax advantage.

The Associated Press reported last week on Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd., a Bermuda investment company that Romney owned and transferred to his wife's trust the day before he was sworn in as Massachusetts governor.

"The relevance is this -- that Governor Romney can?t claim that his state actually was great at creating jobs when he was governor, so he?s fallen back and said, 'Look, vote for me. I was a businessman. I created jobs,'" Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." "You want to talk about going the way of Europe -- what went the way of Europe were the Swiss bank accounts and the American dollars that Mitt Romney stuffed in that offshore Swiss bank account."

Chris Kofinis, a Democratic strategist, explained how the secrecy around Romney's wealth impacts voters' perception of him. ?They think this is a candidate who is out of touch and doesn?t understand them,? he said Tuesday on MSNBC's NewsNation.

A point not lost on the Obama re-election strategists.

"Campaigns, especially presidential elections, are battles between narratives. Each campaign is trying to define themselves, trying to define their opponent," Kofinis added. "When you look at Governor Romney and the issues that have come up?that he pays a lower tax rate than most Americans, that he has these offshore accounts, that he has outsourced jobs?it creates a really damaging narrative. And the Romney campaign through their silence, and I would say missteps, have not filled that void."

"[The Romney campaign] has this sense that Americans don?t really care about this," she said. "The problem is you?re going to see Democrats twin this narrative about offshore bank accounts with this narrative out of Bain [Capital] and this whole idea that Mitt Romney doesn?t need to play by the rules.":facepalm:

Even The Wall Street Journal knows this is a dangerous narrative that Romney is playing into. In an Op-Ed Wednesday, the Journal noted that "the Obama campaign is assailing Mr. Romney as an out-of-touch rich man, and the rich man obliged by vacationing this week at his lake-side home with a jet-ski cameo" a reference to the candidate's recent vacation activities.

The firm today has at least 138 funds organized in the Cayman Islands, and Romney himself has personal interests in at least 12, worth as much as $30 million, hidden behind controversial confidentiality disclaimers. Mitt Romney's Bain Capital business experience is increasingly turning into a political liability, according to a swing-state poll released today by Priorities USA Action, the super PAC supporting President Barack Obama.

The survey, conducted by Democratic pollsters Global Strategy Group and the Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group on behalf of the super PAC, supports growing evidence that voters are less likely to vote for Romney based on what they are seeing and hearing about his tenure at private equity firm Bain Capital. Larger polls late last month first showed the shift toward Obama that experts attributed to the president's attacks on Romney's business career.

Among voters polled from battleground states Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, 37 percent said Romney's business experience would make them less likely to vote for him, compared with 27 percent who responded that it would make them more likely to vote for him. Another 58 percent of respondents said they feel Romney's priority as CEO was to earn millions for himself and his investors, irrespective of the consequences for jobs and employees. The poll adds fresh proof that Obama's attacks on Bain Capital are working, despite criticism from Democratic leaders and prominent Obama backers.

When Obama stopped in at Master Lock in Milwaukee, Wisconsin last week, he was walking the plant and stopped to talk with a plant employee and looked up at the banner hanging on the wall and said to the worker and people around him, "It is great to be in a union shop, especially one as old as this union is " - - - - pointing to the banner. He then said, "A Union shop since 1848" - - - and then he went on to talk on what that banner stood for and how important it was to display it and show your union support.

The worker then said to Obama that it was the flag of the State of Wisconsin - - which was founded in 1848.

This was only reported by a local radio station in Milwaukee (1130AM) and not by the major news networks - - - they didn't want to embarrass this "got no clue" President!

Since they didn't do their job of reporting on this presidential visit, the only way for the news to get around is by us - on the Internet.

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter suggested that Mitt Romney may be a criminal on a conference call with reporters this morning about a Boston Globe report that shows that Romney stayed at Bain Capital three years past when he said he'd left.

Cutter said that there were two ways to interpret the story. The first: Mitt Romney was "misrepresenting his position" at Bain to the Securities and Exchange Commission, "which is a felony."

Or, he was "misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people. If that?s the case, if he was lying to the American people, that?s a real character and trust issue," Cutter said.

Cutter called on the Romney campaign to clear up by the issue by releasing the candidate's tax returns.

"If the SEC filings aren?t accurate, then prove it," she said.

Bob Bauer, head lawyer for the Obama campaign and a former White House counsel, also implied that Romney could be in legal trouble. He said that SEC documents are "very carefully scrutinized by lawyers because of the very severe consequences that follow from making statements to the SEC that aren?t correct."

"Of particular consequence woud be a misrepresentation that involved a controlling person," Bauer said, and "Romney is the controlling person."

The Obama team's charges against Romney extended all the way to his handling of the Salt Lake City Olympics, which Cutter described as "less than wholesome."

"These aren?t just campaign tactics, this is important information," Cutter said.

Earlier today, Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in a statement that the Boston Globe story was "not accurate." She did not specifically respond to a request for comment regarding the "felony" statement by Cutter.

"Romney and Bain claim that he was not involved with Bain, but Bain and its portfolio companies in their required filings under the Securities Exchange Act continuously certified to the Securities and Exchange Commission say precisely the opposite--asserting without qualification that he was a controlling person, fully in charge of Bain, under the Federal securities law. Under normal circumstances, the question of the truth of this representation would result in an investigation by the SEC into possible criminal, as well as civil, violations of the law."
