... what the hell does that mean? I remember in high school we used to run the first 2 or 3 plays scripted, but how do you run 15 scripted plays? I mean you're gonna have all kinds of variance in outcome and situational permutations.

Talk to Andy Reid, he does it, and the Eagles have had some very strange playcalls early in games because of it. I guess the thought it to have everyone very comfortable with the first 15 plays and go out there to execute them well. Eagles have typically been a good first drive team so I guess there is some success behind it, but like I said, there tend to be some playcalls that just don't seem smart for the down/distance they come up with.

When I played, our coach always scripted a minimum of 10 plays to open the game. Sometimes he would do 15. The thinking is that if you have a good drive you should get through most of, if not all of the plays. And you practice them over and over in practice the week before the game, so when gameday comes you should have the plays down.
But what if its like 3rd or 4th and an inch and your scripted play is play action bomb or some shit? 999 patterns?

the first play was QB sneak on "touch"... meaning the qb would put his hands under center, and the center would snap it without any cadence, that always worked for like 4-5 yds at least. We sucked so we had to resort to trickery like that.

Well, there's some wiggle room. If it was 4th and inches you could run a QB sneak, get the 1st down, then go back to whatever the next play is on the list.
Yeah, we had some trickeration too. We had a play where the QB acted like he was coming off the field due to an injury, then when he was about to get to the sideline the center would direct snap it to the RB who would throw it downfield to the QB.
We sort of scripted our first 50 plays or so. Sweep left, then sweep right, then sweep left, then sweep right. Throw in an occasional power and iso...

Sometimes coaches call plays to see how the defense reacts. Then later in the game they may call a different play out of the same formation. Or the same play out of a different formation.
