USC currently has a 9 game winning streak!!!!

USC is also currently on a 15 game home winning streak!!!!!

2 other interesting notes that could help your handicapping on USC,,,,,,,,,

USC has won 27 of their last 31 games!!!

The average USC loss is only 4pts!!!!

I think USC has covered 18/21 games ATS!!!!

LSU has won their last 8 games!!!!

I think Ohio St. has a long home winning streak!

These articles should help....looks like Miami Ohio holds the longest winning streak in the nation, followed by Boise State (another reason I wanted to see these two play in a bowl last year :cursin: ) The big losers of 2003 were Army, SMU, Iowa St and Illinois.

CFB Streaks: Winning and Losing

By Larry Ness

The 2003 college football season ended with a split national championship when, despite being ranked No. 1 in both so-called human polls, USC was left out the BCS title game. LSU beat Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, assuring the Tigers of a national championship as voted by the coaches' poll but USC's Rose Bowl win over Michigan a few days before the Sugar bowl game, kept the Trojans atop the AP poll....

Just last week, the NCAA introduced a new selection process for determining college football's top teams. The writers' poll, the coaches' poll and a combination of computer rankings will now each comprise one-third of a team's ranking. Also, criteria such as strength of schedule, team record and quality wins, have been eliminated....

If this new system would have been in place last year, LSU would have finished first in the final BCS standings and played No. 2 USC in the Sugar Bowl. Whether these changes are for the better is debatable but what's not debatable is that the only real way to crown a true champion, is the establishment of a playoff system....

As it is, co-national champions USC and LSU enter the 2004 college football season on winning streaks of nine and eight games, respectively. And when I say winning streaks, I MEAN winning streaks! USC was a perfect 9-0 ATS in those nine wins, capturing its final eight regular season games by an average margin of 31.2 ppg, before taking care of Michigan in the Rose Bowl by two touchdowns....

LSU was not quite as impressive, as its eight wins came by an average margin of victory of 21.9 ppg. A three-point win at Mississippi and a 21-14 win over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl kept LSU's margin of victory about 10 points per game less than USC's but the Tigers still went an impressive 7-1 ATS....

While USC and LSU enter this season as co-national champions, they do not enter the new year with the longest current winning streaks in college football. Boise State of the WAC, enters the year on an 11-game winning streak (just 6-5 ATS) and Miami-Ohio of the MAC, comes into the 2004 season on a 13-game winning streak(10-3 ATS)....

On the other end of the spectrum, Army finished the 2003 season as the first Division 1-A team to ever finish a year 0-13! With losses in its final two games of the 2002 season, Army enters this year on a nation-worst, 15-game slide. During its losing streak, Army is 4-11 ATS, with just two of its losses coming by less than double-digits....

Right behind the Cadets, is SMU. The Mustangs went 0-12 (3-9 ATS) in 2003, three times just missing out on a win. They lost to Baylor 10-7, to Nevada 12-9 and to UTEP 21-19. Tied for the nation's third-longest current losing streak at 10 consecutive losses are Iowa State and Illinois....

Iowa State, a school that went to bowl games in three consecutive years from 2000 through 2002, opened the 2003 season with two wins and then lost its final 10 games of the year, by a whopping average of 34 ppg! No one will find it surprising that they also went 0-10 ATS during that time!...

Illinois, a school that just two years ago played in the Sugar Bowl during a 10-2 season, also ended the 2003 season on a 10-game losing streak. While they were more competitive than Iowa State, the Hoosiers did lose five games by at least 26 points and after a 6-3 loss at UCLA (at + 10), failed to cover ANY of their final nine losses!....

Also of note entering the 2004 season, are these winning streaks. The nation's longest current home winning streak belongs to Boise State, at 18 straight (11-6 ATS). Ohio State at 16 straight (10-6 ATS) and USC at 15 straight (11-4 ATS), are right behind the Broncos.....

Since Miami-Florida lost at Virginia Tech last November, ending the Hurricanes' 17-game regular season road winning streak, no school enters the 2004 season with a road winning streak worth mentioning....

Army not only holds the distinction of owning the nation's longest current overall losing streak, the Cadets also lead the way with 13 straight home losses (2-9-1 ATS)....

Last year, three schools ended long road losing streaks. Tulsa snapped its road losing streak at 17 straight games, while Idaho and UTEP ended road losing streaks at 16 games. Still going into the 2004 season however, are Eastern Michigan's 25-game road losing streak (8-17 ATS), Baylor's 19-game road losing streak (6-13 ATS) and 13-game road losing streaks by Indiana (3-9-1 ATS) and Vanderbilt (4-9 ATS)....

Wednesday, I'll preview the teams involved in current winning streaks and where they may end (or NOT end!). On Friday, I'll look at the losers and any opportunities they may have in 2004 to break through....

CFB Streaks (Part 2):

In this second part of my three-part series of CFB streaks, I'll preview those teams that will be entering the 2004 college football season with the nation's longest current winning streaks. On Friday, I'll preview those teams with the longest current losing streaks. On to the winners and some comments regarding their 2004 prospects....

Miami-Ohio of the MAC, enters the 2004 season on a 13-game winning streak, the longest current streak of any Division 1-A school. Led by Ben Roethlisberger (now a Pittsburgh Steeler), the Redhawks won their final 13 games of the 2003 year, after an opening game loss at Iowa (21-3). Winning is nothing new for the 'other' Miami, as 2003 was the school's NINTH consecutive wining season, yet 2003 was Miami's first MAC title after a 16-year drought and the school's GMAC Bowl appearance was its first since 1986!...

The Redhawks will be a formidable team once again in 2004 but without Big Ben at QB, the team's 13-game winning streak is all but doomed! They open with a home game but then visit Ann Arbor on September 4. Miami's record since 1994 vs Big-10 teams is just 3-9 SU. All three wins during that time have come against Northwestern, while in the nine losses the Redhawks have been beaten by an average of 17.7 ppg! If somehow the Redhawks escaped Michigan with a win, the very next week they would face a serious let-down spot playing at bitter-rival Cincinnati. The Bearcats are a much improved team in 2004 and were bowl-bound in 2000, 2001 and 2002. More trouble awaits Miami in its MAC opener on September 29. That night (Wednesday) they will visit Marshall, a team that had its run of seven consecutive bowl games snapped at seven last year. From 1997 through 2002, Marshall went 38-1 SU (20-10-1 ATS) on its home field and is considered by many to be the favorite this year to win the league....

Boise State enters 2004 on an 11-game winning streak. The last two seasons, the Broncos have cruised through league play by winning all 16 games. In 2002, they outscored their WAC counterparts by the average score of 51.1-13.9 and in 2003 the margin was 46.9-17.9! The school's three-year WAC totals stand at 22-2 SU in conference play, with an ATS mark of 18-6....

The Broncos return only three offensive starters in 2004, losing outstanding QB Ryan Dinwiddie (61.9 31-7), 1000-yard rusher David Mikell (1142 / 13 TDs) and leading-receiver Tim Gilligan (67-1192). The Broncos' 2004 schedule however, is very favorable. They play just four road games (they'll be favored in all) and their three toughest games are all at home, where the Broncos own the nation's longest current home winning streak (18 games!)....

The team's first test comes at home on September 11 vs Oregon State, a team that gave Boise its only loss in 2003 (26-24 at Oregon St). The Broncos will primed for revenge and get an added break by the fact that Oregon State will have played the week before at LSU, the defending national champions! What can't be ignored however, is Boise State's 0-9 SU record all-time vs Pac-10 teams!...

The final two Saturdays of October, Boise State will host its two chief WAC rivals, first Fresno State and then Hawaii. The Fresno State game provides us with what could be, a special moment. The Broncos could very well be undefeated when they meet (assuming a win over Oregon State), meaning the Broncos would enter this game on a 17-game overall winning streak and a 22-game home winning streak. College football fans may remember that back in 2001, Boise State went into Fresno as 16-point underdogs and beat the Bulldogs that night 35-30, ending the Bulldogs' 17-game home winning streak! If college football fans don't remember, you can assured that Fresno fans do!...

USC owns the nation's third-longest winning streak at nine games! Pete Carroll has done a remarkable job at USC. After a 6-6 first year in 2001 and a 3-2 start in 2002, Carroll has led the Trojans to 19 wins in their last 20 games, going 18-2 ATS! The team's only loss during that span, was a triple-OT game at Cal last year (34-31)!...

QB Matt Leinart (63.4 38-9) is back and will make a serious run at the Heisman and although USC is no longer known as Tailback-U, the Trojans have three RBs (White, Dennis and Bush) that will combine to give them one of the nation's finest running games! Leinart's receiving corps will not be as good as last year but Mike Williams may yet get back on the field. As for the defense, there were significant losses but the team is loaded with NFL-caliber players!...

USC will face a tough test when they open the college football season on August 28 with a game vs Virginia Tech in Washington, DC (BCA Football Classic). Tech is ALWAYS a dangerous underdog but this is a team that lost its best player in RB Kevin Jones and has suffered from the off-field problems of QB Marcus Vick. It also should be pointed out that Frank Beamer's team collapsed down the stretch in 2003, losing FOUR of their final five games (only win was a 24-23 win against Temple!)....

On November 6, USC could be tested at Corvallis, where Oregon State has gone 29-4 SU since 1999 but it's hard to ignore this fact. Oregon State has been outscored 1102-340 by USC with only one SU win over the Trojans in the last 36 years! Assuming the Trojans don't get tripped up by Va Tech, a win in their game at home vs Cal on October 2 could put them in position for another run at the national championship....

Cal is a dangerous team led by highly-regarded head coach Jeff Tedford and owns one of the nation's finest passing combos in QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Geoff McArthur. Cal also returns nine defensive starters this year but expecting them to win at the Coliseum where USC will enter this year on a 15-game winning streak (11-4 ATS), with the memory of Cal's triple-OT win last year dominating the atmosphere, seems far-fetched!...

LSU, winner of last year's BCS title game over Oklahoma, opens the 2004 season with college football's fourth-longest winning streak (eight games). LSU covered seven of those eight wins, led by the nation's stingiest defense. LSU finished the year allowing just 11 ppg, 67 ypg rushing and 252 ypg of total offense! This year's defense may not be quite that dominating but they won't be chopped liver either! Offensively, LSU will have to find a new QB plus replace its top-two receivers but RB Justin Vincent is destined for stardom....

It's unlikely however, that LSU will make it to mid-season without a loss. They play at Auburn on September 18 and visit Athens and Gainsville in the first two weeks of October. Auburn's got a great defense and a super-star RB in Carnell Williams, as well as a 22-5 SU home record since 2000, that includes 31-7 and 34-17 wins over LSU....

Georgia was beaten twice by the Tigers last year, including 42-0 in the SEC Championship Game. The Bulldogs will be primed for revenge when the Tigers visit Athens with a team loaded with returning starters, a veteran QB in David Greene and an excellent defense. Georgia enters the 2004 season with a 14-game home winning streak....

The Gators have gone 8-5 in each of the last two seasons but no trip to Gainsville is a walk in the park and QB Chris Leak proved last year in beating LSU in Baton Rouge 19-7 (LSU's lone loss of 2003), how dangerous he can be....

One final winning streak that hasn't already been mentioned, belongs to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State enters this year with 16 consecutive home wins, just ahead of USC (15) and Georgia (14) and two wins behind Boise State....

The Buckeyes will no longer have master-winner Craig Krenzel at QB but in Ross and Hall, they have an excellent pair of RBs. Last year, Ohio State's rush defense (64.2 ypg) ranked behind only LSU's and despite returning just four starters, will once again have one of the nation's best defenses....

On October 9, the Buckeyes will welcome the Wisconsin Badgers to Columbus. It won't be lost on Ohio State that last year in Madison, the Badgers beat the Buckeyes 17-10, ending Ohio State's 20-game winning streak! A win over the Badgers most probably means the Buckeyes will enter their season-ending home game with Michigan on a 21-game home winning streak as besides Wisconsin, Ohio State will host only Cincinnati and Marshall out of conference and Indiana and Penn St in conference (5-19 combined record in 2003), prior to the Wolverines....

Friday I'll return with a look at some lovable losers....

CFB Streaks: Part 3

In the final segment of my three-part series on CFB streaks, losing teams take center stage. While over its illustrious history Army has produced three national championships as well as three Heisman Trophy, this service academy has not beaten a top-20 team since 1972 and enters the 2004 season with not only the nation's longest current losing streak (15 games / 4-11 ATS) but also its longest current home losing streak (13 games / 2-9-1 ATS) as well....

As Army enters its final season in C-USA, 67-year-old Bobby Ross takes over as its new head coach. Ross won a national championship while at Georgia Tech (1990) and in the NFL led the Chargers to a Super Bowl but at West Point his main focus will be in trying to bring some sort of respectability and competitiveness to this once proud program....

Ross plans on returning the Cadets to a run-based attack and that seems smart. Back in 1998 and 1999, Army averaged 294 and 265 rushing yards per game and finished 3-8 both seasons. In 2002, Army's rushing attack averaged just 120 ypg as they went 1-11 and then in last year's 0-13 (4-9 ATS) campaign, Army's average of 63.5 ypg rushing ranked dead last among 117 Division 1-A schools!...

Army returns 18 starters from last year's team, an unusually high number for a service academy. Last year the team suffered from a terrible turnover ration of minus-20 and that almost has to improve. Army's first real chance for a win comes in its Homecoming game on October 9 vs Cincinnati. Last year the Cadets led the Bearcats 29-26 in the 4th quarter before losing, 33-29. Looking ahead at Army's schedule however, shows that its most winnable games may well be on the road....

They play at East Carolina on October 30. The Pirates beat Army last year in West Point 38-32, for that school's only win in a 1-11 season. If like Yogi Berra, you believe in deja vu all over again, then Army's game at Tulane on November 13, will be its breakthrough!...

Army's last win came at Tulane (14-10) near the end of the 2002 season. Army's last home win also came vs the Green Wave, when they beat Tulane at West Point 42-35 in 2001. Tulane lost two key players from last year's team in JP Losman (a first round NFL pick) and RB Mewelde Moore, just the second player in NCAA history to gain over 4000 yards rushing and over 2000 yards receiving....

SMU won its final game of the 2002 season but went winless in 2003 (0-12 SU and 3-9 ATS) and enters this year with the nation's second-longest current losing streak. The Mustangs were one of the nation's best teams in the early 80s but after being handed the death penalty by the NCAA in 1987, have had just one winning season since! SMU averaged an NCAA-low 11.2 ppg and 260.6 ypg last year and its prospects for improvement don't look all that bright in 2004. The team's best chance for a win comes in their fourth game of the season at home vs San Jose State. The Spartans lost a very good QB in Scott Rislov (59.7 18-5) and the team's leading returning rusher gained just 371 yards!...

It's hard to believe how far and how quickly things have fallen at Iowa State. Dan McCarney led the Cyclones to three straight bowls from 2000-2002 but since reaching a 6-1 record and a No. 9 ranking in the polls at the mid-way mark of the 2002 season, the Cyclones have gone 3-16!...

That includes 10 straight losses (also 0-10 ATS!) to end the 2003 season, losing by an average margin of 34 ppg! Iowa State expects to be greatly improved in 2004 though and will likely end its 10-game slide in its season-opener vs Northern Iowa, a solid Division 1-AA school (10-3 last year and ranked No. 6) but not up to the task here. As far as the rest of the schedule goes, Iowa State draws Okla St, Texas A & M and Baylor out of the Big-12 South this season, rather than Okla, Texas and Tex Tech, as they did last year!...

Like Iowa State, Illinois also fell hard and far in 2003. In 2001, the Illini went 10-1 in the regular season and earned a Sugar Bowl berth opposite LSU. By 2003 however, Illinois had lost its final 10 games of the year going 1-9 ATS, including nine consecutive ATS losses to end the year!...

Illinois won't be anything special in 2004 but they have a solid chance to start 3-0! They open with Florida A & M at home on September 4 and follow that game with home games against UCLA and Western Michigan. UCLA barely beat Illinois last year out in Los Angeles (6-3) and finished its 2003 season on a five-game losing streak. As for Western Michigan, the Broncos are a long way from the team that played in back-to-back MAC Championship Games in 1999 and 2000. The 2004 edition features a new starting QB and just 11 returning starters from a 5-7 team. Illinois may not be 3-0 when Purdue visits Champaign-Urbana on September 25 but they won't be on a 13-game losing streak either!...

While Army's 13-game home losing streak stands alone among college football teams entering the 2004 season, there are a number of schools that feature some pretty ugly losing streaks, as the upcoming year approaches. Leading the way with 25 straight road losses (8-17 ATS), is Eastern Michigan....

The Eagles last won a road game at Toledo (20-13), back in 1999. They open 2004 with a first-year head coach in Jeff Genyk, whose highest previous coaching experience came as a RBs coach! At least he features an excellent RB to work with in senior Anthony Sherrell, who ran for 1531 yards in 2003....

The Eagles' first road game is at Florida (forget about it!) but they will have at least three chances to win on the road this year. The first comes on October 9 at Ball State, a team they beat in Ypsilanti 38-14 last year. The following Saturday, they visit Western Michigan, a team they'll surely be underdogs against but a team that is far from unbeatable. It won't help the Eagles though, that both of these games will be Homecoming games for their opponents. They can forget about winning at Bowling Green on October 30 but they might have a final shot at winning at Kent State on November 13. Truth be told though, the Eagles could very well make it to 30 straight road losses by the end of the season....

The Baylor Bears enter Guy Morriss' second year in Waco on a 19-game road losing streak (6-13 ATS). Last year the Bears averaged just 15.9 ppg (ranking 110 out 117 teams) and finished 114th in total yards. Their defense allowed 37.9 ppg (112th) and 450.8 ypg (105th)! Baylor opens its season this year on the road at UAB on September 4. The Bears better break through with a win there however, as they play just four more road games in 2004 and they can't expect to win at Texas, Nebraska, Texas Tech or Oklahoma State! UAB will be no gimme though, as Watson Brown's team has an exciting QB in Darrell Hackney and 18 returning starters. Can you say 24 straight road losses!...

From 1986 through 1993 under Bill Mallory, Indiana went to six bowl games. The school hasn't however, had a winning season since 1994! They enter the 2004 season on a 13-game road losing streak (3-9-1 ATS), having last won at Michigan State (37-28) back in 2001. Gerry DiNardo enters his third year as the team's head coach and returns 18 starters from a team that averaged just 14.8 ppg (114th) on offense, while allowing 32.3 ppg (94th) on defense....

Indiana's first road game is at Oregon but they have little chance to win in Eugene. Breakthrough opportunities seem to lie at Kentucky on September 18 (they outplayed the Wildcats in the first half last year before losing 34-17), at Northwestern on October 9 (lost at home to these Wildcats last year 37-31 in OT) and at Illinois on November 6 (beat Illinois at home last year 17-14)....

Also entering the 2004 season on a 13-game losing streak (4-9 ATS) is Vanderbilt. The Commodores last won on the road at Duke (does that count?) 42-28 in 2001. Vanderbilt will be greatly improved in 2004 with 21 of 22 starters returning from last year's team but the fact remains that the Commodores posted the school's 21st consecutive losing season in 2003 and they still have too much ground to make up in the SEC!...

Of note will be Vanderbilt's road game at Navy on September 25. Navy had quite a turnaround year in 2003 going 8-5 after a three-year mark of 3-30 from 2000-2002. Last year Navy beat Vanderbilt in Nashville, 37-27 but Vanderbilt owned the lead in the second half. One other chance for a road win could come at Kentucky on November 13 but you can be sure the Wildcats will remember Vanderbilt's 28-17 win last year in Nashville, a win that snapped the Commodores' 23-game SEC losing streak!...

Just after reading this article I really like the idea of Boise State getting Oregon State at home the week after they play LSU, especially with revenge on their mind. Hard to overlook that 0-9 record all time vs the Pac Ten, but Boise can't ask for a better situation to play the Beavers this year.

I agree about Boise, Blackman.

OSU, in the recent past, has scheduled strictly cupcakes OOC. Back to back tough road games this early, is out of character for the Beavers.

The problem I see, is, after seeing LSU's D up close, Boise's D might look like a high school team. OSU's offense should be focused after a loss. If the Beavers manage a win @ LSU, then I really like Boise's chances.

Blackman your right on the money.

Miami of Ohio enters the year with a 13 game winning streak and Army enters the year with a 14 game losing streak!
