Bartolo Colon is what is giving the Sox fans hope this year. The latest ?just one more starting pitcher? that Sox fans always crave had an impressive 2002 (and a great career, too). Maybe it?s because the White Sox used to shell this guy, maybe because whenever the Sox go out and get someone good, he?s a bust, or maybe because I don?t trust fat pitchers, I feel Colon will be THE reason that the Sox don?t win the division.

Colon?s k?s/inning ratio has fallen over the past two year, which necessarily a bad thing, but when you don?t get people out yourself as a Chicago pitcher, you?ve got no one to blame but yourself. Valentin and Jimenez as the heart of your infield, Lee in left field, Konerko at first, you can?t rely on any of them in the field. Once the trust in his fielders wanes, Colon will try to be the overpowering pitcher that he was in 2000 and 2001 and maybe he can do it; but gravity will most likely say no. The quick fix increases in the pitching staff look good on paper, look good for the fans, but it doesn?t solve the problem that the team is built for offense at the expense of its defense. The whole town (and much of the country) backs the Cubs and it hurts the Southsiders in the pocket books. But instead of trying to build a winner to get the fans back, they try and replicate the home run power of Sosa and they become a B-league ticket. All the pitching in the world coming up on the farm and they don?t give them any support. It sucks as a fan.

Sox are going to be under pressure from the start this season as a miserable April buried them in 2002. They had to decide between two all-stars for their opening day pitcher decision. The Royals flipped a coin. Chicago has to make hay early in the season as KC, Detroit and Cleveland are the only teams that it will play in April and if they can?t get a lead over the Twins now, it will only be harder later in the season. A lot of pressure for a team that got shut out Monday.

Sox will have some success this year, but Colon should have a terrible first half.

Affeldt + ~ 160 (will wait until gametime) 1 unit

P.S. Read and interesting factoid about K.C. ? No Left-Handed Relief Pitchers. None. Nada. Zilch. Can?t remember ever seeing that.

Bobby-The Sox went 16-11 last April.
Jimenez is a very underrated 2B, and was a defensive standout in the minors when he was a top prospect. He made some tremendous plays on Monday.
Valentin is a liability, but makes the routine play. He had a miscue on Monday, but he usually puts those away. He isn't close to a gold glover, but adaquate in the field. Obviously good enough of a player to win the division with (see 2000 when he played SS full time.) Also, Valentin hasn't had a defensive guy like Crede there in his career. Crede should get to some of the balls that Jose had to get when Norton was there in 2000.
Lee and Konerko are adaquate. Lee doesn't have the range, but he is far from a Conseco out there. He made some big time strides out there over the past years, and looks to be in the best shape of his career. Konerko isn't going to lose you any games with his glove at first. Remember, he was a 3B coming up, so he can pick it a little.
Colon won 10 games in each league last year. He is a Cy Young candidate. No way he has a "terrible" first half.

If you think you found value with Affeldt though, that's fine. I just you are VASTLY underrating Colon and what he brings to the table.

Thx for the correction. I was probably thinking about the April in 2001. I never trust any star player to come to a club and make an immediate impact and even less so w/ the sox.

I am certainly not a baseball expert, but I think that Garland and Wright (once healthy) will be the strength of this staff. I hope Colon does as well as you think.

If Garland and Wright are the strength of the staff, we should be in the drivers seat:cool:

We should also get some nice overlays on them as well, don't you think? Especially Garland in the first few games. We are going to have to wait until Mid-may on Wright.

I'm sure we'll have a few more discussions on the Sox in the next few months:thumb:

I had the pleasure (or displeasure) of watching Jimenez very very closely while playing for the padres the last 2 years. I can honestly say that I have not seen a more disinterested and lazy ballplayer in the 25 years I've followed baseball. He is a below average 2nd baseman and is absolutely awful at turning the DP. He's still young and I really hope he can turn things around because he's a good kid, but BBC hit it right on the nose.

You made spit water all over my monitor laughing so hard..

this may seem like it's two disgruntled padres fans here but Jimenez is the laziest Baseball player I've ever watched play. He has NO range whatsoever, that's why he was moved from SS to 2nd. He has never been known for his glove, he was a good hitter in the minors but after his car accident has never put up the numbers he was expected to in the bigs. Give him a few months and WSox fans will boo him louder than we booed him here.

It's not my place, but Jimenez had major problems with the Padres organization. That is his thing, none of us have any idea about what happened. All I know is that he didn't want to be there. Should that of let his play been effected...no. But we don't know what the situation was.
The scouting reports on him I have read talk about his defense. That was with the Yankee organization. He played horribly for the Padres, but see above.

Nice call Bobby-Colon wasn't hitting his spots, especially at 0-2, 1-2. I think Rick White is going to get the boot within the next month, he isn't very good, as proven by Colorado last year, and spring training this year.

As for betting White Sox games, I wouldn't lay the big juice. Stick to the runline. If they are going to win the game, like last year, they are going to win it by more than one run.

Thx for the props. Sweeney's hit off of Jimenez's glove as well as Konerko's attempt on Grafiano's throw hurt the Sox today. A utility SS needs to get that bunt down in the 9th and Frank was all pull today after looking like he was getting back to form on Monday. Sox hit the ball well, though and Colon looked good. He has to be able to put guys away, though, when he's 1-2 and 0-2 with runners in scoring position.

Garland will right the ship tomorrow.
