Interesting assessment in this story from The Atlantic Magazine. Plenty these days ripping Obama for what he has done to the debt and why NOW republicans scream about how we have to worry about the debt ceiling - this shows a different picture...

http://m.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/07/the-chart-that-should-accompany-all-discussions-of-the-debt-ceiling/242484/

By the way - I see some of you talking about how Bush had to endure the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and how that hurt his debt, and then see how you rip on Obama for continuing these wars - and give him no credit for THOSE expenditures. Not to mention our other military actions... ironic, to say the least. And also the talk about the Bush tax cuts creating so much revenue - I guess those revenues were long overtaken by loss of revenues in adding the MOST to our debt over the past few years...

Interesting Chad.

Let's climb aboard the wayback machine and imagine a scenario where Bush takes intelligence and terrorism threats seriously, 9/11 doesn't happen so Bush doesn't respond by starting two unnecessary wars, he doesn't implement unnecessary tax cuts, he doesn't deregulate Wall Street and the financial sector and he takes measures to address the housing bubble.

That immediately wipes out more than $6 TRILLION in debt (plus all the interest accumulated on that debt over the past 10 years) and leaves Bush's $180 billion Medicare Pt. B and Obama's $152 billion healthcare and entitlement reforms on the books.

Instead of Bush's "War on Terror" we've been hyper-focused on for the past 10 years, we could have declared a "War on Debt" and built upon the Clinton budget surplus and be well on our way to a debt-free nation.

Oh, what could have been.

Another satisfied customer with the current situation because, "it's not The Obama's fault?"

How many years would you suggest we give The Obama to turn around even one economic indicator? I'll even spot you another two years with democratic control of Congress which he had.

He's the one who promised he would immediately pull out the troops, lift poor people out of poverty and get America back to work.

If you want to rate Obama's effectiveness ahead of Bush's go ahead...who cares...let's just all sit back and wait to see the administration take a leadership role on something other than what McDonalds is serving.

As for the chart, it doesn't take Einstein to figure out that in Bush's third year, you would not have projected $1.9trillion in spending that did occur.

The defense savings are projected for The Obama and the chart assumes no additional incremental spending increases (above current rates) over the next five years (hopefully that happens but, what are the odds?)

That makes the current gap listed of $3.6trillion fall to $1.6trillion...you can do the rest of the math considering the debt, under The Obama is now rising at a rate of $4.1billion per day. You can also hope that you don't have to respond to a national disaster like 9/11 which caused the creation of a new department in the executive branch.

Carter was the worse president ever but, even then, everyone had stopped blaming him for everything wrong by George senior's third year.

ObamaCare sure FIXED this economy, good job LIBERALS.

The government?s surpluses during FY1998-FY2001 reduced debt held by the public by
$448 billion. The debt holdings of government accounts grew by $853 billion over
the same period. The total net change raised total federal debt by $405 billion

Bob, considering $8 trillion of our current $14 trillion debt is interest accrued since 1987, I've gotta wonder how much of the $4.1 billion per day is interest??

off the top of my head--how did they miss O's--escalated cost(surge) in afgan--bail outs-Libya.

Where did they go?--how did they figure cost of stimulus was $711--#'s on Ocare are a joke--(medicare rx program costs more the healthcare reform)-- DUH--could you/they elaborate how they came up with those #

GW defict in 8 years = Gumby's in 2 1/2
Yet biggest cost on GW was wars--however Iraq cost gone for most part and Afgan increased in this admin but added to GW in chart.

Amazing the smoke and mirrors they will use to avoid and putting up the simple #'s. GW deficit 8 years vs Gunby 2 1/2 years. The games people play to try and deviate perception from the obvious--and the people they get to bite!

Largest cost on GW's was Iraq war which has came down considerably as noted previously- but Ocare will escalate yearly--if not repealed

Without getting too far down the pike here with a rebuttal - I note you are finding fault with these numbers, Wayne, and claiming other (unsourced) numbers as being somehow more accurate. Just to add some perspective...

The main thing I'd like to point out - which would be pretty hard to argue with, I would say - is that the biggest chunk of the debt (BY FAR) is attributed across both administrations and consists of 2.237 TRILLION dollars for tax cuts.

Clearly, tax cuts have not done what we were told they would do - and history has shown repeatedly that they do NOT generate more tax revenue on their own than collected taxes. This gets back to the top 1% of wage earners NOT being job creators, just high wage earners that work for companies. It was more than true here in Minnesota, and I'm sure that's the case across the country.

Otherwise, we shouldn't have ANY worries right now, due to 2.237 TRILLION in tax cuts, right?

He's the one who promised he would immediately pull out the troops

If you want to rate Obama's effectiveness ahead of Bush's go ahead...who cares..

A few points, Bob. First, I am not satisfied with the current situation. I would offer that personally I have suffered as much as most here and elsewhere because of the economic downturn, losing my insurance benefits and most of the hours at my good job a couple of years ago. So, don't put words in my mouth - no matter how easy that may be for you...

I've been on record as saying I am holding Obama to task this year on deficit reduction - I consider it a critical thing for the citizens of the country (ALL OF THEM) and it to be a matter of national security moving forward. My jury is still out, and I'm not satisfied. I think things are changing, and he said it was his top mission this year - time will tell. I don't think he's gone far enough personally to make me feel better about what HE thinks should be done. But I will give the administration a chance, along with the House and Senate to get something done.

I think the current situation is EVERYBODY's fault - voters included. I think it's Obama's fault. I think it's Bush's fault. I don't think either should be off the hook, despite supporters of both trying to make it seem that way. I don't rate Obama's effectiveness on economic issues higher than Bush - to do that is kind of pointless in my view. I did not vote for Obama for economic reasons, per se. I voted for him because I considered Bush an embarrassment publicly and on the world stage, and I didn't agree with most of his policies. And I did not see much changing with the next person running as a republican. I do value a lot of what Ron Paul stands for, and honestly would consider voting for him next time around if things don't get better. But we won't get a chance for that - we'll get a Romney or a Perry, and I doubt I can support that. Bachmann will self-destruct before she gets a real chance - bank on that. She already has for anyone paying attention to the details...

One other thing. I don't remember Obama PROMISING to IMMEDIATELY pull out the troops. Although you're not being specific, you are trying to forward a political point, and I can't let that go. What troops? What country? And specifically he said IMMEDIATELY? I am VERY happy he has pulled out as many as he has, and will continue to do so. If nothing else, this is a debt reduction move that will help the country now and in the future, economically. Which also can be looked at as a national security issue, in my view.

The reason the Ocare numbers are so low is that they are ignoring the $850B in new taxes that went along with the law. The number shown are net.

Which is a joke - it is $1 trillion of spending, combined with tax increases that could have gone to much better use (if implemented at all) - could help a small bit towards deficit reduction or even towards balancing the budget.

See, since they "wasted" those tax dollars on Ocare, then there is less potential tax dollars to go after down the road for something that is really needed.

What do you know about Obama Care and the costs? What are the costs if we do not do Obama Care?
I admit I do not know.

Lets see if I can follow this thread-
-we are currently in world changing event--

Because one party who has already ran up biggest deficts in history-is wanting to expand the already unprecended debt and raise tax on the people--

we have the other side opting for smaller gov-decreased spending-balanced budget amendment--and no tax increase.

--and people really have to ask--
"who is responsible"

--and now trying to use the parties own website for their Gumby's grift --may I add flashback to Gumby's/whitehouse Era of Responsibilty site--

I'll make it simple for you, Dogs...

With the exception of discretionary spending, we can agree the Clinton Admin submitted and was responsible for the debt through FY 2001. Likewise, we can agree the Bush Admin submitted and was responsible for the debt through FY 2009. Are ya still with me, Dogs? Good. Let's look at the numbers.

- The National Debt at the end of FY 2001 was $5.8 trillion.
- The National Debt at the end of FY 2009 was $11.9 trillion.

That's right. Bush doubled the National Debt during his administrations.

The National Debt is currently at $14.2 trillion. That puts Obama on the hook for $2.3 trillion.

Let's break down the $2.3 trillion that's been added to the debt for FY 2010 and FY 2011 (which ends Sept. 30th).

- Interest for FY 2010: Approx. $400 billion
- Interest for FY 2011: Approx. $400 billion
- Iraq/Afghanistan War funding: Approx. $280 billion
- Stimulus spending: $Approx. $800 billion
- Bush Tax Cuts for FY 2010: Approx. $350 billion
- Bush Tax Cuts for FY 2011: Approx. $350 billion

Total: $2.58 trillion (which exceeds the amount added to the national debt for FY 2010 and FY 2011, so far).

Conclusion: Of the $2.3 trillion added to the National Debt for FY 2010 and FY 2011 (so far), the majority is a direct result of interest and the continuation of Bush Admin policies, which of course, exposes the hypocrisy of right-wing demagoguery over Obamacare and the Stimulus spending over the past two and a half years.

These numbers are so simple, a child could understand them. The question is... Why can't you?
