Astros summary

Rookie scratched

Refusing to make an excuse for his recent struggles, Carlos Hernandez wouldn't say how long he has pitched with a tender left shoulder this season. But there's enough discomfort in the shoulder to force the Astros to skip the rookie lefthander from his scheduled start today against the Diamondbacks.

Hernandez (5-3, 4.43 ERA) has not won since May 31, when he beat the Cubs 4-1 at Wrigley Field. He lost his last outing, 8-0, against Seattle, pitching only two innings in the shortest start of his career.

Hernandez had to cut short his 2001 season after he suffered a partially torn left rotator cuff Aug. 29 diving into second base. He is 0-1 with an 8.15 ERA (16 earned runs in 17 2/3) in four starts in June.

"The irritation has been there for a while, but it hasn't hurt my control," he said. "If it's bothered me for a month, I still don't want to use this as an excuse."

Because the Astros had Monday off, manager Jimy Williams could go with Roy Oswalt (7-5, 3.20 ERA) on the normal four days of rest today. If the Astros don't call someone up from the minors, another option could be reliever Nelson Cruz (0-4, 4.40), who has served as a long reliever.

Williams wasn't ready Wednesday night to announce his starter for today, but he did say there is a chance Hernandez could be ready to pitch this weekend against the Rangers......

Oswalt's team is 5-2 when he starts at home, 3.29 era.

Last July he had his only career start against AZ, at Houston, and he went 8 innings, gave up 1 earned run.

Nelson Cruz, first start today since '99

Nelson Cruz, first start today since '99

Rototimes is reporting that 'Stros officially announced Cruz to start today.

in Astros' bullpen this season he's pitched 30 innings, 37 hits, and 15 earned runs. So whip of 1.6, era of 4.40.

his last starts were with Detroit:

N.Cruz (R) Last 10 Starts Date Opposition Scr Line W/L IP H R ER SO BB HR PIT P/IP G/F
7/9/1999 (Det.) Mil. 1-4 155/11.5 L/U 6.0 7 4 4 4 1 1 97 16.2 3.67
7/3/1999 (Det.) @Min. 2-7 -115/11.5 L/U 6.0 9 6 6 3 1 1 97 16.2 1.50
6/24/1999 (Det.) @KC 6-4 140/10 W/P 6.0 11 4 4 4 0 1 96 16.0 1.33
6/19/1999 (Det.) Oak. 1-13 -145/10 L/O 2.0 4 6 6 1 2 2 52 26.0 4.00
6/14/1999 (Det.) Sea. 8-7 -110/11 W/O 4.1 9 7 5 5 3 1 110 27.3 1.67
6/8/1999 (Det.) Pit. 11-4 115/10.5 W/O 7.0 2 1 1 2 3 0 114 16.3 0.46

four earned runs or more in each, except the first exciting one.

that could be the adrenaline situation today.

Astros have won three of last four day games at home. 15-9 overall in day games this season.

and Astros have lost 8 of last 10 times as home dogs.

but Arizona is 1-6 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125 sez statfox. (under 6-1) and 16-23 last three seasons.

my feeling is Cruz will be fine today, the bullpen has gotten better and is ready to go (covers sez available Astros bullpen has 2.70 era last 3).

and HP ump Hernandez is on a 6 game under streak.

so I'm gonna put the under bet in again.

I was looking at a possible under play also. I suppose I will pass on it now,or perhaps just reducemy play somewhat. I lean towards night unders a bit more, always shy about the daytime under anyway.
