Why do you defer in a dome?

That's an interesting point, ST. Regardless of what happens today. I've always thought that coaches underestimated the importance of getting the first score. Defer seems to be the automatic call. But I agree with you. If you have confidence in your offense, I think I'd take the ball.

Best wishes, ST.

I think it goes back to a sports psych principle that the peak point of anxiety is right before the start of a competition. With the gross motor skills needed to play defense, you have a chance to hit a few people and get the jitters out before sending your offense on the field. On the flip side, the QB has a chance to throw a couple in the shitter or a WR might have a drop because those are more refined skills that could be greater affected by performance anxiety.

I always thought it was to get the ball at the start of the second half. If you happen to score right at half, then you get the ball back and have the chance to put more points on the board, at least that's the logic I use when I am playing college fball on my PS2.
