I?ve been perusing the picks today and it looks like Boston vs. M?s picks are running somewhere around 90% that Boston will win. I going to take a contrary position and pick M?s over Boston, and just for the heck of it guess the final score will be 7-3.
My reasoning is this (a) Boston is 5-5 in Pedro Martinez last ten starts. Two of those wins were off Detroit , one off Tampa, and one off Anaheim; making the 10 game record a little less impressive. (b) Pedro has an unbelievably good record against the M?s. I think he?s due to revert to a more believable record. (c) Another way of looking at it is that he doesn't have any record against this years team so his .94 ERA and 6-0 record against the M's over the last three years may not translate to what will happen with the batters out there today. (d) Joel Pineiro has been pitching below his capability. Think he?s due to revert to form. (e) Pedro needs to pitch close to a complete game to keep the Boston bullpen out of it. Don?t think this will happen. Pedro has only pitched one complete game in his last 10 starts. Probably reach the 100 plus pitch mark around the 6th and get pulled. (f) Mariner?s are pumped after last nights game with Ichi?s grand slam and McLemore going 4 for 4
