First off, I would like to preface this by saying that this is by no means an attack on anyone in this forum or the forum itself. Like anything else in this forum, this is simply my humble opinion, and it is something that I would appreciate feedback about. Some people may brush this off because I may not be enough of a "regular" to post this. Even so, I think this forum is not what it used to be in the past and I would like to see it return somewhat to what it was.
What ever happened to reasoning behind picks, some analysis?
When someone comes into the pucks forum, all they see are a bunch of posts with picks listed. How is this helpful when it is not put into any context? In the past, there used to be great write-ups and discussion about games and why certain picks look good. I think this is one of the best ways to handicap. You are fooling yourself if you think that a person can pick solely by numbers and data. There is an innate part involved, certain types of offenses versus defenses, the time of the season, the importance of the game, etc etc. Now I'm not saying that everyone doesn't do this at home, but in the past we used to discuss it on this board.
Now I know what some people may be thinking, and I agree. Who has TIME to do analysis, it takes long enough just to cap games. I'm not saying I wished people would write dissertations about their picks. But how about a little reasoning occasionally? How about some discussion a little more in depth about games? I only wish we had this more because in the past it was like that in here. To me, MJ's hockey forum is now a lot like every other handicapping forum out there. People just listing picks with little true capping discussion. If I wanted that I could go ask 5 strangers to list their picks for me on the street. When you break it down, that's pretty much what it is.
So what's wrong with just listing picks?
What good are people's picks if they aren't in any CONTEXT? Why do people post only picks if they don't keep track of their record and post that as well. If I open up a thread and it lists 6 picks, it really has zero value to me if I don't know that person's record. And yes, some guys around here have such credibility that maybe they can get away with doing this. But for a majority, especially considering the number of new guys in here, this really applies.
I truly believe that betting is an extremely streaky thing. I know people hit stretches were they can do no wrong and think this is the easiest thing in the world. And then there are times when you can't pick a winner to save your life. I want to know if someone is 10-2 for the week. Cause that person is on a hot streak and I want to see what they like. A lot of times, guys will post their current hot streak. But it is rare that someone actually posts that they are in a rut if they don't keep an overall record. Someone may be 2-10 for the week. That guy's picks take a whole new meaning with that information.
So what is your point?
When I first came to MadJack's, I felt like I had stumbled on a diamond in the rough. A handicapping forum without all the crap, without the egos and the name calling, a place where true discussion about handicapping hockey could be found. Slowly, at least to me, it has gotten away from that. All I see when I come in here now is the same thing. And to be honest, the few times that I have posted questions that required thoughtful response, I barely got any. It seems to me that the only way to get people to respond to you is to take a half an hour a day to go through every single post and personally wish every person in here good luck and tell them they are great. You should all know as a fellow capper I want all of us to win. I shouldn't have to individually do it to get people to respond to anything.
So yeah, if you guys think this was out of line, that's your opinion. This is the internet, I'm just another faceless name. I can just pack up and look for another rare good capping site. I just wish MJ's pucks forum was what it used to be.
