The tuck rule is a rule in American football, currently used only by the National Football League (NFL).

Ordinarily, if the quarterback drops or loses the football while he is bringing the ball forward in a passing motion, and the ball touches the ground, it is considered an incomplete pass. If the quarterback drops or loses the football at any other time, it is considered a fumble, as if any other player had dropped it.

The tuck rule is an exception to this rule. It applies if the quarterback brings his arm forward in a passing motion, but then changes his mind and tries to keep hold of the football rather than making a pass. In this situation, if the quarterback loses the ball while stopping his passing motion or bringing the ball back to his body, it is still considered a forward pass (and thus an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground).[1] Mike Pereira, the NFL's director of officiating, notes that the design of the rule obviates the need to consider the quarterback's intent.[2], though this seems to be incorrect, since the rule states that "When a Team A player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his hand starts a forward pass", thus meaning that the referee must judge whether the forward movement of the arm was intentional on the part of the player or not. However, the rule does mean the referee need not judge whether the player was intending to check his throw.

The rule is not without its critics. Former Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs said, "It makes no sense to me. It's the way it's worded. I think everybody probably sees that and says it's a bad rule."[2]

The NFL came up with this rule
to justify the Official's bad call on that cold snowy day....

I think the reason for all the jet haters is because the jets have the dumbest and biggest moran fans, seriously.
I don't know if it's the 40 years of losing or being the step child to the other football team in new york.
At least they're not a bunch of a-holes like the eagles fans :thefinger
Sanchez will be a good qb no doubt just needs a bit more experience.

Have you ever been to a yankee game Mr Bryan?
I treat the opposing team fans with respect and yes red sox fans also.
If they want to be jack asses that's the way they will be treated.
Unless you sit in the bleacher seats you will be ok got it Mr Bryan ;)

Under a mask.
I actually think what makes this site great is the sports talk post .Sports are not all about gambling.
As long as they don't interfere with people plays I see no harm no foul.As the games draw nearer usually do the picks.Antway....

Totally agree Rusty, and what would any site be without passionate fans:shrug:
If Ravens were in the champ game, I bet Jack would be all over these boards talking smack....
This is a great site because of great fans and great people like yourself and many others. Haters need to find another place to bitch and complain. Just my take.

real good point..

considering that Rivers threw for 298 yards vs the Jets and Gates had 8 catches for 93 yards.

what I don't understand is how does that fact that Jackson had 7 catches as well for 111 yards..

also lost in all this breakdown is the fact that S.D. amassed 344 yards of total offense..

oh yea ..their kicker butchered 3 FG attempts.

You know i love it when people or so called bettors just look at stats like how many yards a team gained or how many yards a certain player got.that doesnt tell the story of how a game was played.the first key is that gates jackson didnt score a td(although jackson almost got one late) the fact is that the jets held the chargers to as you say "botched field goals' which proves my point of how the jets defense dominated by limiting the chargers to field goals even though sd gained yardage when crunch time came all they could do was try a field goal.in playoff games Tds win not field goals at least for the majority of the game.as far as the stats(which mean shit to me) yes the chargers put up some numbers which only helps if you have fantasy team.maybe the reason sd had some good passing"numbers"they couldnt run the ball.maybe because they were is some 3rd and 17 to go the jets gave them some underneath passers for 10 -15 yards.the numbers dont tell the story if you stop the run sack and pressure the qb force turnovers you can win.sure when all is said and done you look at some "numbers' yeah gates got his yards but what kind of yards, most of the chargers yards were in the first half and yes i agree they did move the ball well early on.but they still were basically held to field goal attemps which is what a winning team does.Manning is great and will be a acid test for the jets but to throw out numbers out there as a reason one team did so well is absurb IMO.the better team won the game.and yes ill take the points with this jet team this week even though i realize betting vs peyton is a dangerous proposition.good luck whichever side you choose if you decide to wager but it should be a great game

donbuck thanks for the input..

I would reply..

The Chargers butchered the game from the onset.

They insisted on giving Tomlinson the ball which was just plain stupid.Too old..too slow..Sproles got 3 touches for 33 yards..

Stats certainly don't tell the whole story..But this one tells a lot of it..

Kaeding, who is the AFC's Pro Bowl kicker, missed three field goals (from 36, 57 and 40 yards), after entering the game with a streak of 20 kicks without a miss.Screw the 57 yarder..ya miss from 36 and 40 on your home turf with perfect conditions..ya cost your team 6..you cost your team time management..and you cost you team vital options down the stretch of game.

the field goals should have been the Jets demise..with no more offense than this Jet team had the yardage gained against them was enough to defeat them.

The 3 wide sets up the tightend perfectly vs The Jets who must cover the tightend{Gates} and he was wide open the whole game.
note** Indy will do the same with Clark.

Jets opened the game

New York Jets first 8 possessions

1 Punt 3 AND OUT
2 Punt 3 AND OUT
3 Punt 3 AND OUT
4 Punt
5 Punt

6 Punt
7 FG
8 INT

some where in the first 8 possessions I am supposed to firgure out the Jets were the better team that day...I'll just disagree and leave it at that...but to say:mj07:

Chargers stunk up the joint..

Jets go the first 8 possessions with no more than a FG and it will be a mighty long day in Lucas Oil Stadium...Cuzzz.. extra touches for this Colt team can't be nothing but bad news for a team that amassed 262 of total net "O" of which 53 came on Greene's run.

Manning is great and will be a acid test for the jets but to throw out numbers out there as a reason one team did so well is absurb IMO.the better team won the game.and yes ill take the points with this jet team this week even though i realize betting vs peyton is a dangerous proposition.good luck whichever side you choose if you decide to wager but it should be a great game

so ..some stuff I agree with..some I don't..but that is the fun of it.:argue:

enjoy the game donbuck from staten island

hey it that in New York..

The unfortunate thing about staten island is more people lost their lives on at the world trade center on 9-11 then any other borough in new york :(

I agree that Sproles should have gotten ALL of the touches. Way more explosive and capable of busting at any moment.

Indy doesn't have a running game. All I hear is rookie quarterback, but Indy has starts Garcon, Collie and rotates in Brown as well. Addai isn't going anywhere against this defense. But we knew that already. Addai didn't go for 100 yards all year. That says a lot about the Colts being one dimensional against an excellent defense.

We've seen Pittsburgh and NE in the past just beat the piss out of Indy and confuse Manning with blitzes. But there will be plays when only one or two guys rushes and they drop everybody.

NE used to beat the crap out of their receivers before the rule changes- so we'll see how the refs call the game.

I've seen enough of Manning to know he's a winner. I had him hard last week. I've also seen him go 8-8 in the playoffs. He's great- no, he's the greatest. His team, however, is one dimensional. The Colts D is getting too much love. I expect the Jets O-line bully them- and for Sanchez to make the plays when he has to. GL.
