Scott, it's a shame you had to grow up in a situation such as you described, however, I am not a stranger to it either. You could say that I was your mother in the scenario and wore more than one shiner. My friends must've thought I had some pretty active doors since they were walked into so much!
I suppose responses differ in how people react to those situations. I'm happy to say I survived to become a self-sufficient woman who now believes that she has a lot to offer the world, not the pathetic, insecure wretch I once was. I can say that seeing Jackie Gleason winding up and telling Alice "to the moon" makes me laugh and doesn't send me into flashbacks. Maybe you should lighten up and see the commercial for the facetious cartoon it was intended to be rather than internalizing it.
