Still, even though young players get very low money comparatively in baseball, I can recall guys for first class organizations like Lance Berkman and Derek Jeter getting decent contracts rather than standard renewals.

The Angels basically lost no key parts from a championship team, but here is what makes me skeptical of their value this season:

1) Can a group of no-name middle relievers produce again?

2) If Sele is done as he appears to be, can Appier and Washburn (who is now injured) hold up this starting staff?

3) Was the resurgence of Glaus and Salmon real or will they continue the slides they were in leading into 2002?

The nice part about the Angels from a gambling perspective is that they really don't rely on big name starters. Johnson and Schilling on the D-Backs and Clemens and Mussina on the Yanks were almost sure to be -200+ every time out. really only Washburn gets -200+ prices consistently. Maybe with reasonable prices (even dog prices vs. big name divisoin opponents) on Lackey, Ortiz, etc., this team will still be one to look for early.

How serious is Washburn's injury? One thing that worries me about the Angels is their offense is a high average offense with a real lack of walks. Teams just don't keep hitting .290 and Glaus/Salmon are their most patient hitters. Those two are the key. If Glaus is healthy I can see a MVP type year. As for the renewals, perhaps the team being for sale still has something to do with that. Later Nick...
