Latley, I also haven't been able to play any of the stuff I download from the world famous MadJacks General Discussion Forum.

I been getting...
"This program performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

I know others are downloading these files and viewing them with no problems.

Try this:

Go to Controls
Add/remove programs
Choose "Windows Components"
Uncheck the "Windows Media Player" one
Then ok
then do it again, turning it back on, it should should reinstall.

It could very well be that file in question is of a format which is not known to your system. If it is a DivX clip, then you will need to download the DivX codecs, or if it is of Xvid format, then you need the Xvid codecs, and so on.

One word of caution about DivX drivers/codecs which you will find on:

http://www.divx.com

There is a freeware version and there is the shareware version.
The shareware version is clean of adware and does no harm.
The freeware version will put gator on your machine if you use the codes to write.
In view of the above, if you do not want to pay, then install only the player and enough stuff for you to view the files. If you want to create DivX content, then obtain the shareware version.

Click on anything??? I will read it as any media file recognized as a file associate with the Media Player. It seems to me that the file associations have gotten hayway on your system, and yes, re-installing Media Player might resolve your issues. BUT there are no guarantees, not with Micro$oft products.

Here is where you can get the latest version:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx

I will caution you though, Media Player has its own security issues. Since official support for Windows 98 is fading away, you want to be watchful.
