The first non-sudden death overtime in NFL history could be coming this weekend.

The league?s new postseason overtime rules are now in effect, meaning a field goal on the first possession of overtime doesn?t end the game. Instead, if the team receiving the overtime kickoff kicks a field goal on the first drive, the other team would have a chance to either tie the game with a field goal (at which point it would be sudden death from there) or win the game with a touchdown. A touchdown or safety at any point in overtime would win the game.

So will the new rule make teams more or less likely to play for overtime? And could it make teams decide to kick, rather than receive, at the start of overtime?

We won?t really know until we see playoff overtime, but Saints coach Sean Payton said today that it could make him handle late-game strategy differently.

?I think you?ll pay attention to how the game is progressing,? Payton said. ?How the first four quarters have gone would predicate your decision on how you would handle it.?

So we?ll have to wait and see whether it makes a difference if one of the 11 postseason games ends with the new and (the league hopes) improved overtime.

i love this rule...wasn`t aware of it....

anything that adds an element of strategy to the game...that actually has the potential to force a coach to think....that`s a big plus for the nfl,in my book...

now it might be strategy that decides a hard fought game instead of the flip of a coin...:toast:

i really like the way we match-up with k.c....i think they beat one playoff team this year...and that was seattle...look at their schedule...

we do better against more balanced offense,imo...

if we HAVE to go on the road to play a team, who(other than maybe seattle) could we possibly rather play than k.c.?.....

the colts are getting too healthy...they scare the hell out of me...

but i don`t think THEY match up well against the jets...

You missed my joke.

Yes, I am confident playing KC.

I am confident playing any of the teams.

not sure if i'm understanding the OT rule correctly. Is OT sudden death after the first possession or does the other team receive a possession if the team scores a FG on say the 3rd possession of OT?

i take it to mean that after respective 1st possessions in o.t(given f.g.`s by both teams),it reverts to sudden death...

but i could be wrong...if that`s the case,it could have been written much more clearly...

The ONLY change is:

a field goal on the first possession of overtime doesn?t end the game

A friendly $50 paid at the SB party?

That's a bet. I'm taking the worst of it, I'm sure, without odds, but a friendly bet. :toast: .

On the course!

Not really.

It's an 8-1 static wager, and there are 11 games?

Three this week are FG or less spreads.

Plus.....if the NFL is "fixed", they will want this new rule to play out.

:mj07:

I'm fucked.

Can I buy out for $25?

Every game the Ravens play has a good shot of OT. They had 3 this year but could have had several more easily. They play not to lose, so the games are close even if they get off to a nice lead.

Anyway, see you in a few weeks.

FWIW

The Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs will meet for the first time this season when they play each other in the first round of the playoffs. But the teams have played four common opponents this season. The Ravens were 5-0 against Buffalo, Cleveland, Denver and Houston. The Chiefs had a 3-2 record, beating Buffalo and Cleveland, losing to Houston and splitting with Denver.
