Quote of the Day
“I have no doubt this is done in 2028. You know the workforce here; they’re all here and ready to get going. It’s nice to see the validation a day like today brings and what the next three years will mean for the community and for the construction project and the jobs and everything else that you’re going to see as this building comes out of the ground starting as early as tonight.”
A’s team president Marc Badain, after ground was broken on their stadium in Las Vegas

Tuesday’s quiz
In the history of the Seattle Mariners, what pitcher has recorded the most wins?

Monday’s quiz
SEC teams have won the last six national titles in college baseball; Oregon State was the last non-SEC team to win the college baseball national title, in 2018.

**********************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— Braves 3, Mets 2
Ronald Acuna homered for the Braves.
Mets have lost nine of their last ten games.
Atlanta is 25-9 in its last 34 games against the Mets.

— Reds 6, Bronx 1

Reds are 11-5 in their last sixteen games.
New York is 3-8 in its last eleven games.

— Pirates 5, Brewers 4
Nick Gonzales went 5-for-5 with two RBI
Over his last five games, Gonzales is 12 for 22.
Over his last 26 games, Christian Yelich is hitting .402 with 30 RBI.
Yelich drove in 8 runs in a game last week, without hitting a home run; he is the first major leaguer to do that. Ever.

— Cardinals 8, Cubs 2
St Louis hit four HR’s in a game for first time since April 30th.
Matthew Liberatore allowed two runs in 7 IP.
Cubs lost four of their last five games.

— Angels 9, Red Sox 5

Zach Neto had three hits, including a first inning home run.
Angels scored four runs in bottom of the 8th.
Highly touted prospect Roman Anthony is hitting .128 in his first 38 AB.

Famous birthdays, June 24th:
Michele Lee, 83
Peter Weller, 78
Duval Love, 62
Sherry Stringfield, 58
JJ Redick, 41
Taj Gibson, 40
Tremayne Anchrum, 27
Wilyer Abreu, 26
Christopher Morel, 26
Slade Cecconi, 26

— Last six college baseball national champs:
2025- LSU
2024- Tennessee
2023- LSU
2022- Ole Miss
2021- Mississippi State
2019- Vanderbilt
All SEC teams.

— LSU pitcher Kade Anderson is listed as the #3 prospect in this summer’s amateur baseball draft; he threw 130 pitches in LSU’s win over Coastal Carolina in the College World Series on Saturday.
Someone on TV was saying how that will be the last time ever that Anderson will be asked to throw that many pitches. Pro teams coddle their pitching prospects; no one in the majors has thrown 120 pitches in a game this season.

— Arizona’s star OF Corbin Carroll has a chip fracture in his left wrist, is out indefinitely.

— Roku had the Baltimore-Bronx game on Sunday morning; Buck Showalter was one of the TV analysts. He needs a more prominent role on TV; Showalter is an excellent analyst.

Word of the Day: Jocularity- the quality of being happy and liking to make jokes.
Father Mulcahy on M*A*S*H used to say “jocularity” a lot.

— NBA season ended Sunday night, with the Thunder winning their first title since 1979, when they were the Seattle SuperSonics; the draft is Wednesday-Thursday, so lot of NBA stuff this week.
Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Halliburton has already had surgery to fix his injured achilles tendon. Pacers’ odds to win the title next year dropped from 10-1 to 40-1.

— Former NBA star Nick Van Exel posted this on Twitter:
“There have been Achilles tears throughout the years but my thoughts on them is that they happen more now and I think it has something to do with them dam lows the players wear nowadays. Cover them ankles up fellas.”
Van Exel thinks more players should wear high-top sneakers, to give ankles/feet more support, which makes a lot of sense.

— Phoenix Suns traded 37-year old Kevin Durant to Houston for:
Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks
the 10th pick in Wednesday draft.
Five second round draft picks
Rockets were the #2-seed in the West, but lost in the first round of the playoffs for Golden State. They’re trying to improve their offense- their half-court offense was bad against the Warriors.
Houston’s odds to win the NBA title next year improved from 18-1 to 8-1.

— Celtics traded Jrue Holiday to Portland for Anfernee Simons and two second round picks.
35-year old Holiday is owed around $72M the next two years; the deal saves Boston $40M in luxury tax payments next season.

— Dallas Mavericks are signing C Daniel Gafford to a 3-year, $60M extension; Gafford scored 12.3 ppg in 57 games for the Mavericks this season.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Mets, Giants, Mil/StL
AL: Bronx, Tigers, Astros. Wild Cards: Rays, Blue Jays, Mariners
