Friday’s 6-pack:
Early season college football spreads:
— Kansas State (-3.5) vs Iowa State
— Kansas (-14) vs Fresno State
— Western Kentucky (-8.5) vs Sam Houston State
— Stanford (-2.5) vs Hawai’i
— Boise State (-9.5) vs South Florida
— Rutgers (-10.5) vs Ohio U

Quote of the Day
“I’m thrilled with the group we got tonight. We’ve got some guys who play the right way, move the ball the right way and have some untapped skills there.”
Brooklyn Nets GM Sean Marks, on his team’s five 1st round draft picks

Friday’s quiz
In the history of the Tampa Bay Rays, who has gotten the most hits?

Thursday’s quiz
Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott has the biggest salary cap hit this coming season ($51M)

Wednesday’s quiz
In his NFL career, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has scored 77 touchdowns in the regular season; his first NFL TD came against the Miami Dolphins.

************************************************

Friday’s Den: Notes on basketball, baseball……..

— Utah Jazz drafted Ace Bailey with the 5th pick in the first round Wednesday night, but apparently he doesn’t want to play there. Rumors had him wanting to play for either the Nets or the Wizards.
The 5th pick in the draft gets a 4-year contract worth $40M; if he were to play overseas next year and eschew playing for Utah, the Jazz would keep his draft rights, so doubtful that happens.
If he totally sits out next year (he can’t play in college anymore), he could go back into the 2026 Draft, but sitting out a full year isn’t a genius move.
Turning down $40M for four years, and delaying the (often lucrative) second contract would be a bold move. This will be interesting to follow.

— Really good players are found all over; these players weren’t drafted in the 1st round:
33rd pick- Jalen Brunson
35th pick- Draymond Green
39th pick- Chris Middleton
41st pick- Nikola Jokic
57th pick- Manu Ginobili

— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the 11th player taken in the 2018; he’s been traded twice already, to the Clippers the night he was drafted, and then again a year later.
Whoops.

— NBA free agency starts in four days, the NBA Finals just ended, but the Knicks still don’t have a coach; what the BLEEP are they doing?
They made the Eastern Conference Finals this year for the first time in 25 years, then fired their coach, Tom Thibodeau. Why? Who will they hire who is a better coach?

— NBA champ Oklahoma City Thunder doesn’t have any free agents this summer, so their roster is their roster, at least for next season.

— ESPN put former Warriors GM Bob Myers and former NBA executive Bobby Myers on their coverage for the 2nd round. More talk about basketball, less talk about players’ parents— that is a good thing.

— College basketball schedules are going to increase from 31 to 32 games, starting in 2026-27; hopefully this will result in more interesting non-conference games.

Famous birthdays, June 27th
Rico Petrocelli, 82
Craig Hodges, 65
Chuck Person, 61
Jeff Conine, 59
Tobey Maguire, 50
Bobby Wagner, 35
Jonah Heim, 30

National League:
Giants 18-8
Phillies 18-14
Nationals 12-9
Dodgers 13-10
Mets 13-11
Marlins 12-11

Padres 15-15
Cubs 11-13
Pirates 12-14
Braves 13-15

Tigers 10-9
Twins 9-13
New York 9-15
Rangers 7-13
Orioles 5-12
Red Sox 10-18

— Last three years on June 25th, MacKenzie Gore pitched against the Padres in San Diego:
6-25-23- W8-3. Allowed a run in 5 IP.
6-25-24- L9-7. Allowed five runs in 5 IP.
6-25-25- L1-0. Allowed a run in 6 IP.

— Astros’ SS Jeremy Pena has switched agents to Scott Boras; he has already turned down a deal worth $100M. Seeing how Alex Bregman also has Boras as an agent, seems likely that Pena will be bolting Houston in the near future.

— Visiting players with the most hits against the Mets at Citi Field:
122- Freddie Freeman
79- Bryce Harper

— There were seven shutouts in the major leagues Tuesday night, tied for 2nd-most ever in one night; in case you were wondering, the record is eight, which happened on June 4th, 1972.

— Trade deadline in baseball is July 31st, but with so many teams in playoff contention, will there be a lot of players up for grabs?

Sunday’s 6-pack:
Conferences with most players taken in the NBA Draft:
13— SEC
10— Big 18
8— ACC
5— Big East
4— Big X
2— Mountain West, Atlantic 15

Quote of the Day
“The way this works, the conversations start to happen around now and kind of comparing notes with other GMs, and that’s been going on the last few days.
People are making their preparations, they understand that we’re not committed to a path yet, but we’re doing preparation in both directions and have an understanding of where that might go. So we want to keep playing, keep giving this team that we think is very talented, but unfortunately has started off with a bad record, as much chance as we can.
But we’re gonna have to ultimately make a decision at some point here in July.”

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

— RIP to the great ballplayer Dave Parker, who passed away this weekend at age 74.
Parker is getting inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame later this summer; he played 19 years in the majors, had an .810 OPS, won two World Series rings, two batting titles and was an All-Star seven times.
RIP, sir.

— Pirates 9, Mets 2
Mets have lost 12 of their last 15 games.
There was an 89-minute rain delay in the second inning.
Game was 3-2 in 8th inning; Pirates broke it open with six runs in bottom of 8th.

— Marlins 8, Diamondbacks 7 (10)
Arizona led 7-3 after seven innings.
Ketel Marte homered, had four RBI.
Marlins have won six games in a row.

— Rangers 3, Mariners 2 (10)
Marcus Semien had a walk-off single for the Rangers.
Third extra-inning game for Texas in their last four games.
Seattle P Bryan Woo has thrown 6+ IP in all 16 of his starts.

— A’s 7, New York 0
Nick Kurtz hit a 3-run homer, his 11th HR in his last 22 games.
JP Sears got the first 17 outs; rookie Jack Perkins got the last ten
Brent Rooker also homered for the A’s.

— White Sox 1, Giants 0
Andrew Benintendi’s homer was the game’s only run.
Under is 7-0 in Adrian Houser’s starts.

Sean Murphy hit a grand slam in 7th inning.
Matt Olson has reached base in his last 29 games.

— NBA Summer League in Las Vegas starts July 10th; it is fun/affordable, a good chance to see really good basketball at close range. I’ve been there several times; it is fun, and after the games are over, you’re still in Las Vegas.

— There were 59 draft picks in this year’s NBA Draft; 49 of those 59 picks were traded at one point, either before, during or after the draft.

— These players have become very good NBA players, but they were never drafted:
Alex Caruso
Lu Dort
TJ McConnell
Fred VanVleet
VanVleet and Houston Rockets just agreed on a 2-year, $50M contract extension.

— In the NHL Draft Saturday, there were 32 players drafted in the 4th round; those 32 players came from 13 different countries.

— This time next year, college sports will look at lot different, as another round of shuffling conference happens- the Pac-12 will be back in business.
Texas State and Arkansas-Little Rock going to join the league, even though they’re nowhere near the Pacific Ocean, much like Cal/Stanford are nowhere near the Atlantic Ocean, but they’re both in the ACC. Go figure.

— Kicker Justin Tucker was suspended 10 weeks by the NFL because he violated the league’s personal conduct policy; he is eligible to return November 11.

— Minnesota at Detroit is the Sunday night baseball game on ESPN, the first time since 2017 that the Tigers have hosted a Sunday night game.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
AL: New York, Tigers, Astros. Wild Cards: Rays, Blue Jays, Mariners
NL: Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Mets, Brewers, Padres

He was an All-Star, a Gold Glover, a batting champion, a National League MVP and a critical part of the 1979 Pirates World Series Championship team.”
