Best Bets:

CHA/SEA Over 121

Lauren Jackson is back for SEA tonight to help a team that has been playing well with rookie Sue Bird scoring a lot of points.

Charlotte has the best offense in the league and while SEA has a good D, I don't see them stopping CHA from scoring 70.

SAC/POR Under 136.5

SAC without leading scorer Yolanda Griffith tonight and Edna Campbell and Kara Walter are still unavailble.

Portland averaging 61.3 ppg, 3rd lowest in the league.

Who's going to score?

Sides:

CHA -1.5
POR +2.5
DET +8.5

Hey Jon,

I was about to load up on this one, but then I started wondering why the books don't share our perspective....

Looking at last years games

http://www.wnba.com/sting/schedule/results_2001.html

Charlotte's games with SEA were some of their lowest totals for the season.

I don't know the answer to this, but just thought I'd throw this out for discussion.

Bosco --

I look at WNBA like I look at college hoops, a lot changes from year-to-year so I don't look at historical data the way I do in bases etc. IMO the teams that match up tonight are very different than the ones that played last year in that 48-38 game.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Storm managed to win two of its first three games without All-Star forward Lauren Jackson, who was out with a sprained ankle.

Rookie point guard Sue Bird and supporting cast have succeeded in painting the winning picture. All that's missing is Jackson's 6-foot-5 frame, along with her 15 points and seven rebounds per game.

"This team can play," said Jackson, who is expected to make her season debut tonight at KeyArena against the Charlotte Sting. "They don't need me."

Contrary to Jackson's modest evaluation, her presence in the post will be welcomed, to say the least. Jackson led the Storm as a rookie last season in minutes played, scoring, rebounding, three-point field goals made, steals and blocks. Her play should complement the newly developed team chemistry.

"We're cautiously optimistic," Coach Lin Dunn said of Jackson's return.

Dunn said Jackson's return will increase the Storm's depth in the post, where Jackson will join Simone Edwards and Kamila Vodichkova in the rotation. With Vodichkova healthy, and Edwards playing well, Dunn said, "Lauren doesn't have to feel like she's got to play 35 minutes."

After completing her first full practice yesterday, Jackson, wearing an egg cast on her right ankle to suppress swelling, said the ankle was fine. She practiced like it. For the first time since her injury, Jackson made sharp cuts through the lane without grimacing. She hustled to corral loose balls, moved well laterally, effortlessly swished countless jumpers, and showed no signs of favoring her right ankle.

"It's (ankle) doing very well," Jackson said. "I didn't feel any pressure at all."

Jackson, who practiced in the half-court sets yesterday, has yet to participate in full-court play. "I'm confident I'll be out there (tonight)," Jackson said. "I just want to be a part of the team again."

Redd, Marciniak practice

Jamie Redd and Michelle Marciniak, who are on the injured list, actively participated in practice yesterday, and might be available for tonight's game.

Neither Redd, out with a strained right knee, nor Marciniak, sidelined by a sprained right ankle, have made their debuts this season. "

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rookie Sue Bird is by far the team's leading scorer, averaging an incredible 37 minutes of play per game, 19.7 ppg and 6.0 assists.

The Charlotte Sting just put away the two best teams in the Western Conference: LA and Houston. With Andrea Stinson and Dawn Staley both playing well, they may be the best team in the WNBA this year. FWIW, Charlotte started very slow last year winning just 2 of their first 12 before making a run to the championship series vs LA.

In summary, two very different teams match up tonight with much better offenses. I think Vegas is using last year's games as the benchmark and that is why the line is so low. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll find out tonight.

Portland is just plain terrible-- 14 straight regular season losses. And they just lost Forward Barksdale this afternoon (not a starter but most minutes) to a broken finger in practice. The question here is why isn't Sacramento, the much better team, favored big here. The line opened at SAC -2.5.

The reason is that SAC is hurting. When you have to suit up one of your coaches for a game you're in trouble.

"On the eve of a three-game road trip, the Monarchs learned they had to leave their heart at home.

Yolanda Griffith, Sacramento's All-Star center, will be sidelined for at least three games because of a bulging disc at the base of her neck.

Wednesday, the Monarchs placed Griffith on the injured list and activated 6-foot-4 center Monique Ambers, who had been in her first season as a Sacramento assistant coach.

The Monarchs already are without guard Edna Campbell, who started every game last season but is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Center Kara Wolters has been hobbled by a left-ankle sprain.

"With Edna out, then Kara out, and now Yolanda out, this is a tough break for the team," said coach Maura McHugh. "We have no idea how long (Griffith will be sidelined). It might be only the three games, or it could take a little longer."

The absence of Griffith, the team's leader as well as top scorer and rebounder, could create real trouble.

"The team is obviously upset," said McHugh. "But they still know we have a good team with a lot of depth -- and this is why, to deal with this kind of situation."

Griffith, the WNBA's leading rebounder in 2001, had experienced some numbness in her right hand while playing in Italy this spring. Saturday, she felt pain in her neck, shoulder and right arm during the Monarchs' opening game, a 63-61 loss to Minnesota. Playing limited minutes because of foul trouble, Griffith scored 14 points with four rebounds.

"We knew something was wrong, but she didn't tell me until after the game," said McHugh. "By the end of the game, she couldn't lift her right arm and couldn't catch the ball at all."

Tests on Monday and Tuesday revealed a minor disc bulge between the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae, according to trainer Jill Jackson. Griffith began treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs and will be re-evaluated daily.

"Just holding her head up can irritate the disc," said Jackson. "But we're hoping it will respond to medication."

Griffith will miss tonight's game in Portland against the 0-4 Fire, which is riding a 14-game losing streak dating to last season. However, Portland beat Sacramento twice in the preseason, including a 77-50 blowout.

Griffith also won't be available for Sunday's nationally televised game against the Houston Comets and Tuesday's rematch with the Lynx in Minnesota. But Wolters is expected to make those two road games.

Meanwhile, Ambers joins the roster. A former member of the Phoenix Mercury, she played at Arizona State for McHugh.

"We're so thin at the post right now, we need someone immediately," said McHugh. "Monique knows our system. We're going on a road trip, and she's ready."

According to league rules, Ambers cannot coach while playing. To return to her assistant's job, she must be waived as a player, then wait 48 hours to clear waivers."

well, twasnt easy

well, twasnt easy

i took the over with you and it shoulda been a hella lot easier ... if you guys didnt follow it, we only needed 6 pts with app. 3:30 left in a tite game (i figure this has to be in, fouls in last secs, etc.)... well, we got 2 pts with 2:20, then zilch until ....

(0:00) [SEA] Redd Rebound (Off:2 Def:1)
(0:01) [CHA] Staley Jump Shot: Missed
(0:08) [SEA 65-59] Bird Free Throw 2 of 2 (17 PTS)
(0:08) [SEA 64-59] Bird Free Throw 1 of 2 (16 PTS)
(0:08) [CHA] Feaster Foul: Personal (4 PF)
(0:09) [CHA 59-63] Staley Layup Shot: Made (10 PTS)
(0:10) [CHA] Sutton-Brown Rebound (Off:2 Def:4)
(0:13) [CHA] Staley Jump Shot: Missed
(0:30) [SEA 63-57] Barnes Free Throw 2 of 2 (5 PTS)
(0:30) [SEA 62-57] Barnes Free Throw 1 of 2 (4 PTS)

so we went over with 9 tix left ... If Charlotte doesnt get RB. after staleys missed trey with 13 secs, and they miss again and foul Seattle, we woulda ha to have made 2 FTs to win ... Otherwise Charlotte tosses up a meanigless trey at buzzer for our last gasp ...

How any games dont go over with 8 pts needed at 3:30 ...

least we didnt get bad luck, but it was sweat, I listened to end on radio ..

glad anyone else was on this one

good call SB
