Boston College coach Tom O'Brien has been hired as North Carolina State's new football coach, multiple sources close to the situation said Wednesday night.

The Wolfpack chose O'Brien over Navy coach Paul Johnson, who was contacted about the job earlier this week.

O'Brien, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, led the Eagles to a 9-3 record this season. He had a 75-45 record in 10 seasons with the Eagles. Boston College plays Navy in the Dec. 30 Meineke Car Care Bowl.

The board of governors has scheduled a Friday meeting to approve O'Brien's contract. Terms of the deal weren't immediately known.

agree...we now have a smart, stable coach...dont like the lateral ACC team shift, but i will be happy to have him here...at least he is not "new to the block" in coaching in the league

Why would a guy go from BC to NC State . That is a bizzare downward lateral move.

Better climate definitely and I'm sure he is cashing in. Just think he will have a tough time establishing himself with all the competition around the Mid Atlantic area. He seemed to own the northeast the last 5 years. Oh well, money talks and that goes to every walk of life!

N.C. State hires O'Brien

By Chip Alexander, Staff writer

N.C. State has officially hired Tom O'Brien as its new head football coach.

O'Brien's contract was approved today by the UNC board of governors and NCSU's board of trustees. He will receive a seven-year contract that will pay him a minimum of $1.1 million a year and as much as $1.8 million, based on incentives.

"It's a done deal," said Wendell Murphy, chairman of the board of trustees. "I'm thrilled to death. Hiring good coaches is tough but we have ourselves a very good one."

A news conference will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Murphy Football Center at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Approval by the board of governors was the first official step toward completing O'Brien's hiring. The NCSU board of trustees later met by conference call to approve O'Brien's contract and hiring.

"This is a good hire for N.C. State." board of governors member Frank Grainger said today. "There was no dissension on the board when we discussed the contract. Approval was unanimous."

O'Brien spent 10 years at Boston College, which finished 9-3 this season. The Pack's Chuck Amato was fired Nov. 26 after a 3-9 season.
