Area woman accused of stealing ring during wake
LAFAYETTE ? A woman attending a wake last Friday allegedly took a keepsake from the finger of the deceased as she leaned over his coffin, according to reports from the Crowley Police Department.
Susan M. Duhon, 44, of Geesey Drive in Crowley, was arrested for felony theft after officers found a ring in her possession that hours before had been on the finger of the deceased, said Crowley Police Capt. Richard Sammartino on Tuesday.
The woman was paying her respects at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Crowley on Friday morning. She lives on Geesey Drive, which is across town from the funeral home. Duhon is not an employee of the funeral home, Sammartino said. ?We suspect that she?s some kind of relation (of the deceased), but she would never say,? Sammartino said. He said police believe the theft was an isolated incident, and they have not encountered similar crimes in area funeral homes prior to Friday?s incident.
The ring was ?a nugget wedding ring with diamonds in it,? Sammartino said. The ring is valued at more than $500, but an exact value was unknown, he said. Witnesses reported seeing the ring on the man?s finger before Duhon approached the casket and noticing its absence after she left the coffin, he said.
?Some people in the funeral home saw her hanging over the casket,? Sammartino said.
Officers received the complaint at 9:06 a.m. Friday and after hearing witness statements about Duhon?s behavior, they made a visit to her home, he said. ?We went to her home and interviewed her and found the ring,? Sammartino said. Duhon was booked into the Crowley City Jail and transferred to the Acadia Parish Jail after her bond was set at $10,000.
