Wood BBQ Smokers

Cook Shack. Nothing else compares. I need to work for them. I got one last year and have already gotten 4 of my friends to get one.

I got the Smokette 009 which is all stainless. Two of my friends got one on ebay.

Cook Shack has a great BBQ forum for finding out the do's and don't's of smoking.

Example: 5 lb pork butt gets a rub down and goes in smoker on 230 degrees for about 10 hours. (This time is for my smoker) After 10 hours butt is about 195 internal. This is ideal for pulled pork.

I always use 3 oz. wood.

I went to a BBQ cookoff and most of the pros had Cook Shacks. That was the main reason I got one. I have no doubts.

I'm actually looking for a wood smoker that can also use charcoal if I just want to do burgers real fast. I'm not as interested in the electric or gas smokers.

I'm surprised to hear that the pros at a cookoff use electric smokers.

There is nothing like it on the market today, and it solves all kinds of outdoor
cooking problems.

The pros use the wood pellet type smokers and grills. Pretty sure that Traeger makes the best.

Traeger XL

Price: $1,995.00

All natural wood pellets are poured into the hopper. When you push the "On" switch, the hot rod activates for about four minutes, igniting the pellets in the firepot. The auger automatically feeds pellets from the hopper to the firepot where convection air is added, acting like a miniature forge.

Heat and wood smoke surround the food, resulting in fantastic taste. Drippings are channeled out of the cooking chamber into an external bucket for easy disposal.

Flipping the three-position switch to "High" allows you to grill. On "Medium" you can slow cook. The "Smoke" setting allows you to hot-smoke food. In the "Smoke" mode, the grill delivers an even smoke to your food without having to tend the fire. Traeger gives you the convenience of gas, the flavor of real wood!

I have heard that a lot of pros do use the electric smokers. Very easy to control the temps and don't have to baby sit them as much. I have also used a Traeger, and although they also control the temp very well, I didn't feel that the meat got a good smoked flavor like using chunks of wood. They burn wood pellets and come in various types of hardwood. I have an Oklahoma Joes (which has since been bought out by Brinkman) that does a good job for me. One that I would like to someday get is a Lang. They have very even temps throughout the whole cooking chamber. Google "Lang Smokers" and read about them. They aren't cheap, but worth it if you plan on using one alot. If I can make one recommendation, no matter what brand you get, make sure it is constructed w/ some 3/16"-1/4" steel to help hold the heat in the cooking chamber. If you get a cheap one w/ some paper thin construction, you will be fighting to get the heat up to a constant temperature for long periods of time.

Good Luck

I think Cookshack and Traeger are the same company.

Whatever you choose do not get a cheap one at Wally Mart.
