Went with a pellet stove.......easier to controll heat, winters aren't as cold as they used to be

agree with the pellet stove.

i have a wood burning stove. Burning wood in a fireplace doesn't save much money. To me it is a big waste. Pretty with company at the house but for heat, u don't get much for all the wood u burn.

My grandmother had an insert with a blower that would make you think it was july in janurary. Granted her house was not very big she did not have to run the heat.

those are useless..:0074

75% of heat goes up the chimney..

gonna take a look at one of those inserts. I would think u still have to use a lot more wood then a stove. or am i wrong? I never saw anyone with an insert.

less wood actually..

once you learn how to build the hot fire you use "all nighters" to last throughout the night..house is still toasty warm in the morning..pull some hot ashes and reload w/oak/maple..just about anything other than pine..even gum if it has at least a year of split season..

"all nighters" are larger around cuts[if it fits ya burn it] with about 3 to 4 months of season[or more is ok....burn slow on the scalding hot bed of wood and embers..

for a period of over 5 years I never turned the heat on in the house..or the a/c but that is another story for another day

inserts are awesome...and they are so nicely made now that who can use them for effect or whatever bearskin rug stuff ya into..

here is the stove I currently have..ours is about 20 years old..

any questions by anybody I will be glad to answer..

over a couple hours of casually overseeing and tending to the fire I can get the house so hot you have to go outside..

ceiling fans disperse the heat..

i wanted to move my stove to my game room instead of the fireplace it sits in now. The piping was between 1 and 2 grand. I gave up on that Idea.
