Imagine him in the pen late in the season.

Throws 12 pitches in rehab outing for Class A Peoria

ST. LOUIS -- Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood threw 12 pitches in one inning on Tuesday night for Class A Peoria, as he continued his rehab.

Wood, pitching in Peoria against Fort Wayne, came on in relief in the fifth inning. He got a first-pitch groundout by Fort Wayne's Michael Campbell to start the inning, then walked Jodam Rivera on five pitches. The next batter, Jesus Lopez, grounded out to short, and Matt Stocco flew out to center.

For the inning, Wood threw 12 pitches, and the radar gun at O'Brien Field registered 91-94 mph.

Wood is scheduled to throw on Thursday and Friday for Peoria, and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry plans on attending Friday's game.

The right-hander, sidelined because of shoulder issues, appeared in four games for the Cubs' Rookie League team in Mesa, Ariz. On Saturday, he threw 17 pitches in one inning, and gave up one hit, and walked one.

"He's still got a ways to go," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Sunday. "To his credit, he's worked hard, and gotten himself in position where he's on our radar screen."

Cubs' Wood makes second rehab appearnace in 2 days
July 27, 2007

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood pitched a perfect first inning in his third rehab assignment and second in two nights with Class A Peoria on Friday night.

Wood originally was scheduled to pitch the fifth inning, but impending bad weather prompted the Cubs to start him against Dayton. The Cubs, who are converting Wood into a reliever, wanted to see him pitch in consecutive games.

For the second consecutive night, Wood threw 13 pitches -- nine for strikes. He didn't allow a hit or a walk with one strikeout.

Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year, has been on the disabled list since the start of the regular season with tendinitis in his right shoulder.

General manager Jim Hendry has said he wants the right-hander to make at least one appearance at Triple-A Iowa before rejoining the Cubs.

good to know he might be returning.

I love my stud starting pitchers.

Keep him healthy and he'd be working on some phenomenal career numbers.

Sounds like the Cubs might have him back around the middle of August.

Wonder what kind of lines he'll command for the first few goes.

Thanks IE
