Expect the Cubs to announce in the next day or two plans to shut down Kerry Wood for the rest of the season as they figure out what type of surgery the fireballer may need in the off-season.

?It?s not about Kerry as much as it?s about us,? said Cubs manager Dusty Baker. ?It?s about where we?re at realistically (in the standings) and where he is now, and we?ll find out when that time comes the severity of whatever is in there, and if it?s nothing we?re very pleased and if it?s something take care of it and give him ample time to rehab so he can start the season on time next year.

?You know it?s something. Everybody knows it?s something when he gets to a certain pitch count he feels something, but he?s looked mighty good up to that pitch count.?

The Padres are calling Brian Giles' injury a bruised right knee, but he'll undergo an MRI to rule out further damage.
The Padres fear that there may be ligament damage to the knee, the same knee in which Giles suffered a strained ligament in April 2003 when playing for the Pirates. ''Hopefully, it's a day to day thing and I will be right back out there,'' said Giles, who added that the injury does not feel the same as when he strained the ligament with Pittsburgh.

Edison Volquez will be called up for the Texas Rangers to start a game in Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox.
With rosters expanding on Thursday, Volquez might not be sent down after the game. The plan would likely be to use him as a reliever, but it's possible that he could land a rotation spot.
