" Word,Word,Word" Incarnate Word.. my trip to Tex St yesterday .. a humbling lesson

I have season tickets to Tex St Bobcats games. They are playing Incarnate Word from San Antonio yesterday at 6 . And I only know that because last years driving to see UTSA vs North Texas I saw the big green sign on the highway saying Exit..Incarnate Word Univ.
I get to the stadium yesterday and I see Tx St fans with signs saying " Word Word Word Who Who Who " I couldn't find a line on the game and just before leaving my house I see Tex St -11. So I put a few **'s to make the game and trip more interesting.
I take my season seat at mid-field in row 5 .. I'm right near the Tx Bench up front. Behind me are some crazy Tex Bobcat fans screaming " why are we playing these guys right after Baylor..there from some private Catholic school in San Antonio. "I realize these guys behind me are wrong maybe a baptist school or Methodist school ,The only Catholic school in San Antonio is St Marys where my roommate at North Texas played golf before he transferred to North Texas..
I am watching the Word team warm up right in front of me and they are huge. I'm watching this qb look who looks like and is built like Cam Newton. What an arm .. But not even sure if he is a starter.. But looks great in warm ups with a rifle of an arm and just flicks the ball..
To the left of me are parents of a Incarnate Word student. So I start talking to them They tell me its a Catholic school run by the " sisters of charity" Wow Never realized the state of Texas has a Catholic football school . They ask me " do I know anything about their football team . I say no but have Tx St -11 over your school They laugh and say " change your bet " because Incarnate is going to blow away your Bobcats . "
We have the best qb in the country and use Mike Leakes spread out air raid offense. That I knew about their air attack but not it was Leaches offensive.
Texas led 17-14 at the half . I could see Tex defense was having problems trying to stop 4 wr's so was going to make a halftime play in IW But my 2 sites weren't taking any live wagering or halftime plays because they were listed as extra games.
Well IW scored 28 points in the 2nd half and won the game 42-34.. Word, word word kicked ass. But the IW qb was amazing His name is Cameron Ward Not sure of his height but has to be 6'3,6'4 or maybe 6'5 Built like the other Cameron . What an arm, pocket presence and flicks the ball and just picked apart Bobcat defense. And he has 2 wr;s one Ferrell who can catch anything throw in his direction . He made a 60 yd catch that should be on ESPN's top ten H-lites and be No 1.
I guess I never did my homework on this game. Ward is not even listed in the top 50 qb's in the country. How everyone bypassed this kid is amazing because he should be in the top 5 qb's in the country.
Talking to the parents of the IW they said he last year threw more touchdown passes then anyone in the country. I said he is amazing/ He ended up with 31-47 with 376 yds for the day. The parents told me " we are not a baptist,Methodist or prison school like many think" we are run by the" sisters of charity" a Catholic organization I said Mea culpa on going against your school as a fellow Catholic " who do you guys play next week " they didn't know .. damn that was a nice hidden gem despite losing To bad Notre Dame missed out on Ward because he is better then anybody ND has.
Last year I watched Sincere McCormick of UTSA in person run all over North Texas and Tex St. I said here I saw the best running back in the state of Texas. I was wrong. Sincere led the nation in rushing for UTSA. Well last night I saw the best qb in the country and I don't care if he a FCS,NCAA juco or from a prison school this kid can play . and we will be seeing him soon in the NFL opps I forgot He is only a sophomore

Told my wife the story about Incarnate Word and she said she knew it was a catholic school from the word Incarnate. I said " what" She was a Methodist her whole life but switched teams to the Catholics a few years back. She said when she down loaded my text bar code on my phone for my admission ticket to the game she said " incarnate " is a Catholic belief . I never knew that. We believe the body and soul of Jesus we receive if we get communion. Darn I missed that in catechism class.. All I know is that Incarnate kicked my ass yesterday..

There were few words uttered in Texas State?s locker room Saturday night.

Silence and the presence of ?pissed off guys? existed inside the Texas State End Zone Complex, Bobcat junior wide receiver Chandler Speights said.

What words were there for what head coach Jake Spavital described as an ?embarrassing? 42-34 loss to Incarnate Word inside Bobcat Stadium ? Texas State?s first loss to an FCS program during its time as an FBS school?

?Coach Spav came up to us after the game and just, you know, told us that?s all on us, which is true, which is true for most of the games that we lose,? Speights said. ?The game is on us. It?s our errors that we make that make us lose our games. So, he just came in and said, ?It?s on us and when we come back next week we got to focus on the little details and small things that made us lose that game. And if we correct that we can win as many games as we want to after we correct them.?

Texas State?s errors proved costly early and often. The Bobcat defense had no answer for Incarnate Word?s passing attack. Cardinal freshman quarterback Cam Ward carved up the Bobcat defense through the air to the tune of 376 yards ? the most yards the Bobcats have given up this season ? and four touchdowns.

?We lost that game as (defensive backs) and as a defense,? said freshman safety Zion Childress, who caught his first career interception Saturday night. ?We gave away too many yards. We didn?t play technical. We didn?t play sound football.?

Despite putting up 34 points, the Bobcat offense also couldn?t find a consistent rhythm against the Cardinals, punting on each opening possession of the half and turning the ball over on downs early in the contest. Two costly turnovers ? one on special teams when a punt hit sophomore cornerback Chris Mills who was blocking on a punt and UIW recovered, and the other by sophomore running back Brock Sturges on a rush ? helped the Cardinals regain the lead twice. After cashing in on Sturges? fumble, UIW never looked back.

The Cardinals doused head coach Eric Morris with a celebratory Gatorade bath following their first win over an FBS school in program history.

On the other sideline, Texas State was left stunned, knowing it was outperformed in its own stadium.

?We know we were supposed to win this game,? Childress said. ?They know we were supposed to win this game, too. They came and beat us. They played a better game.?

Now, Texas State is left with only itself to blame for Saturday?s ?disappointing? result. Spavital and his team owned up to their shortcomings against the Cardinals. But the head coach said it?s time for everyone to look themselves in the mirror to move forward.

?The transparency we have in this program, they know that it?s on us,? Spavital said. ?Regardless of winning or losing, we?re in there coaching, doing the same thing. These kids know if they made a mistake or we?re gonna applaud them when they do good things as well. We?ll even say, ?hey, you know, it?s a really good route by this kid or this is the moment where you?re one-on-one, or this is the weakness and you?ve got to step up and make a good play. Or they made a good play.? We work our way through that together. (The loss is) not gonna affect the culture of our team.?

Texas State?s ?embarrassing? loss may not show any cracks in its established culture. But if the Bobcats stare in the mirror long enough, the reflection might just reveal that in Spavital?s third year at the helm, Texas State is still far from finding success.

My wife went to Incarnate Word high school in Corpus before attending SW Texas State (she prefers the old name). She says her high school is run by a different bunch of nuns, but very Catholic.
