Does anybody have any ideas or work at a place that gives positive incentive to their employees? I feel that sometimes the only reinforcement employees get where I work is negative, and I think morale would be given a boost if positives were around.

What are some ways to recognize/award good behavior, skill, problem solving, going beyond a normal role, taking initiative, being a team-player, etc. that won't break the bank?

Say I have an excellent new employee that works hard, learns fast, helps others, has a great attitude, and is motivated. However, that employee commits a minor error, and the first thing he gets is a "write-up" or negative reinforcement. He's probably thinking in his head, "man, I've done all this other great stuff and tried really hard and get nothing, then I get this write-up for something infinitesimal".

I think whatever it is needs to be tangible and not some kind of a bauble that would be a joke, but I don't think I'll be given much of a budget here.

If anybody has any ideas or a model of what is done at your job, please post.

The company I work for gives me an allotted amount of 'performance points"

Basically, each point is about $2.50 and as employees accumulate they can order out of a catalog, which has alot of high end merchandise, food, vacation packages, etc.

Couple of my reps. won a contest and got 500 points each. One bought a camcorder that writes directly to DVD.

If someone goes above and beyond I'll send them 20 or 30 points to show my gratitude

I would think that someone who can use the word "infinitesimal" so eloquently, can "soiantly" come up with the solution to this problem:SIB

How about something simple like gift certificates?

:SIB well, thanks! I have a few ideas, but I was hoping somebody might be able to clue me in to a process that works. I also don't want it to end up being some popularity contest because that will defeat the purpose totally.

Its actually good sometimes to call an employee in to your office in private. Talk to him man to man and tell him that you think he is doing a great job and is a valuable employee. Sometimes workers just want to hear from the bosses mouth that their work is being appreciated. That alone should boost ones moral

Probably not the same thing but I will relate what I did one time.

I was Ops mgr for a alarm service company. Our service calls required that we charge customers if they were negligent tripping their alarms, leaving doors open etc. The techs were supposed to leave them a charge ticket , but due to laziness, unwilling to confront ppl , etc they didnt do it half the time when they should have.

Our service charges were running maybe 1000 a month. The Gen Mgr asked me what we could do to increase revenue and the bottom line as we were low in sales and he was getting harrassed by upper mgt.

So I came up with this idea to give out prizes for the tech with the most legitimate services charges for the month. First month was a color TV worth about 350.00. This was years ago.

I be damned the first month we had 4500 tickets turned in or close to that.

The next month I put up a complete tool box in a silver case worth about 450.
they could use the tools on the job and made them better capable of doing a good job.
Monthly billings about 6 grand.

The boss was estatic. It was the talk of the company. Everyone was happy even the ppl in other depts that were not included.

This went on about 10 months. Then low and behold some of the lazier techs started getting jealous. The same hustling techs won several times. There was talk about management and the supervisors favoring certain techs on chargable calls and other such bullshit. They even accused me of miscounting their tickets. I brought one guy in my office and counted his tickets and the winners tickets in front of him and let him look at them.

I swear, I will never understand a large group of humans that can be so cynical and hateful. It made me sick, and we stopped doing it.

ppl are nuts.

40% of employees are going to come to work with a good attitude and work hard.

20% of employees will work as long as you supervise them closely and make sure they do their jobs.

20% dont really give two chits about working at all and will bad mouth and be critical of everything.
Take their jobs for granted and expect you to cowtow them. Come in late, lay out , and generally give everyone a hard time.
Spread rumors and just be idiots.

20% of employees are not worth wasting your time with.

I have been the recipiant of many random gift cards in my mailbox at work along with a letter telling me what it's for.

It may not seem like much, but I know I appreciate it. It's nice to go out to dinner with my wife and have the boss pay for it.
