part of my misspent youth was time among lizard and snake hunters/breeders. You'd hear some stories!

But they did say snakes can stretch after death, and most questioned that Guinness Book record 32 footer. It was dead retic from Celebes and length given was approximate based on quote from some dude who heard it from another.

The real question is longest living snake. Not one has never been authenticated over 30 feet. I'd give 5-1 this retic under 35 feet when measured alive by a scientist.

These fanciful stories about huge snakes (the ones slithering on the ground!) are so common and tick off hunters so much that Teddy Roosevelt even got involved. In midst of his 2nd campaign for President he fumed over widespread story of huge anaconda measuring some absurd length. He took time in very busy schedule to pen a terrific letter explaining these issues and an offer of big money if anyone could authenticate a living snake over 30 feet. That money, with a lot of interest, still goes unclaimed.

Croc and Alligators are another. Don't believe any story (and they appear a few times each year) of living one over 21 feet.
