I think the "overthrown" pass you're referring to was that Patterson lost it in the sun...

AND....he gave up on it. As a WR its tough to lose a pass in the sun. Almost impossible to catch...BUT...what you do, that he didn't do, is...you keep running and you try to "catch the sun"

Can't blame if dropped, but that's the only way to do it. You just try to catch the sun...and when the ball hits your hands or body, you hope it either "sticks" or that you can somehow control it from there. Patterson completely gave up on a well thrown ball.
