first, a reminder why you always gotta double (or triple) check opt-out info. covers.com lists Cash Hudson as the Arkansas St Center.
Anyway... Cash Hudson is, in fact, the starting Center for Missouri St. and he's the only notable opt-out tonight. Ok, I typed that 45 minutes ago, and now I'm seeing they may be missing their LT, Ebubedike Nnabugwu. He was the highest-graded pass blocker in the conference. I've confirmed that he's entering the portal, but I can't tell if he's playing tonight. He is listed on the 2-deep for the game, but so is Hudson. Speaking of Hudson, his back-up (Scrivner) is graded very poorly. I'm guessing that's in very limited playing time as Hudson started all 12 games, but he may be pretty bad. The Bears also have some injuries on the defensive front. Mitchell Toney, is listed as questionable. He was listed as questionable their last 2 games, but did not play. They were also missing DL Ryan Williams (who is out again today) both those games, when Missouri St gave up 41 & 42 points, and 388 yards rushing to La Tech. And at least one source says DJ Wesolak, their top sack guy (albeit with just 4), is entering the portal and is unlikely to play.
For Arkansas St, stud LG Tristian Smith is listed as doubtful. He's been out since week 10. That looks to be the only notable absence for the Red Wolves. And, frankly, I can't believe how much time I just spent trying to figure out who is in/out for Missouri St. I'm not digging any deeper on Arkansas St. I'm already sick of this shit.
Alright, I'm nearly an hour deep into this nonsense, and we haven't even gotten to the fun with the coaching staffs! Well, Arkansas St is simple... their HC is Butch Jones. Remember him? Of course you do. Apparently Arkansas St got sick and tired of hiring promising young coaches who quickly left for greener pastures. Speaking of which... the Missouri St HC has left for greener pastures. Coach Beard. You may remember him from Ted Lasso.
Anyway, so who will be leading the Bears tonight? None other than... Nick Petrino. Now, you may think to yourself "Petrino"? That sounds familiar. Yup, he's the son of Bobby Petrino. Known fucker of women who are not his wife. I'm guessing in this case he fucked a potato.
Now, I know nothing about Nick Petrino. But his dad has already made 3 stops since leaving Missouri St after 2022. And it seems odd that he didn't bring Nick with him to any of those places. Could be other reasons. Or could be Bobby doesn't think his half-potato offspring is a very good coach.
How 'bout some football? Missouri St relies mostly on the passing of Jacob Clark. He's a 5th-year senior, and a 3-year starter. His #s took a little dip this year, but it was their first year at the FBS level. He still averages 8.5 yards/att, which is really good. He did throw 11 INTs and he takes a lot of sacks. 37 last year and 40 this year. That could be an issue, as Arkansas St is 27th in the country in sacks. The Bears are also sneaky good at running the ball, even if they don't do it a lot. I say sneaky good, because in college, sacks count against your run stats. So it looks like they only average 3.7 yards/rush, which is pitiful. However, when you take out the sacks, they actually average a respectable 4.8. That could come into play, as Arkansas St gives up 4.7 yards/carry, which is 101st in the country. The Red Wolves also give up 7.9 yards/pass att, which is 113th in the country. The only thing that would hold Missouri St back from scoring a lot of points tonight is that OL that's missing 2 key players. *probably* missing.
Jaylen Raynor is the 3-year starter at QB for the Red Wolves. While his completion percentage has improved every year, his yards/att and TD/INT Ratio have gotten worse every year. Missouri St is 66th in the country, allowing 7.1 yards/att. The Bears are vulnerable to the run, giving up 4.8 yards/rush (113th). It remains to be seen if the Red Wolves can take advantage. Smith (the injured LG) is a great run blocker. Kenyon Clay has the most carries on the team, but only averages a woeful 3.7 yards/rush. Devin Spencer has 26 fewer carries, but averages 5.1 yards/rush. And Raynor averages 4.9 when you take out the sacks.
Arkansas St is 119th in TO margin (-9). Missouri St is dead even in TOs. Interesting stat though... they've fumbled 17 times (17!) but only lost 5. We'll see if that luck holds for one more game.
The line has swung back and forth on this game. Games are won in the trenches, and Missouri St is missing some key linemen on both sides of the ball. BUT... they have the obvious huge motivation edge, being the first bowl game in program history (in their first year at the FBS level).
there are currently some strong winds in Frisco (gusts in the 30s), but it should calm down a little by game time (gusts in the low 20s) and not be a factor by the 2nd half.
if i had any discipline, i'd just stay off this one. but where's the fun in that?
Missouri St ML 2.1 to win 2
1H under 24.5 2 to win 2.2 (this is an alternate #)
Under 54.5 2.1 to win 2
