This game this afternoon in Toronto reminds me of an age old wagering rule.

"Never ask a team to do something they are incapable of doing."

These Toronto Blue Jays had the Yankees over a barrel in this one.........

......Yankees arriving in town at 3 AM for a 1 PM game.
......Yankees in a sure let down spot after sweeping the Red Sox and coming so close to that perfect game last night.
......Yankees resting most of their star players.

And the Blue Jays did take a 5-2 lead midway through the game, but couldn't hold it and here is why: This team doesn't know HOW to win, so we shouldn't EXPECT them to win a gift game like this. That sounds like an oversimplification, but it isn't. The Yankees did all the little things right in this game and the Jays did all the little things wrong.

For instance..........In the early going, Jays star Delgado watched a 6 hopper go past him down the first base line for a double. He was close enough to dive and make an actual try at it but he didn't. The runner eventually scored the first NY run.

In the Bottom of the 6th, the Jays had scored twice to take a 5-2 lead and still had the bases loaded with only one out and the meat of the order coming up. Delgado, instead of being patient, struck out on a pitch in the dirt. Next up was Mondesi and he worked the count to 3-0 and then, lacking the same patience, hit a routine fly to right field on the 3-0 count with the bases loaded. The Blue Jays wouldn't score again.

In the 8th, Mondesi mis-played a fly ball in the right field corner into a double and eventually that runner scored to tie the game at 5.

In the top of the 9th of this 5-5 tie, Toronto closer Billy Koch, faced Derek Jeter and Dave Justice and refused to challenge them, opting instead to nibble at the corners trying to fool them. He walked them both and they both scored to give the Yankees the 7-5 final score.

All the little things that winning teams do, the Yankees did and the Blue Jays did not. This team doesn't know how to win and we shouldn't expect it from them.

Yes, I had Toronto and lost, but this is not a venting thread. It is a warning to myself and others..............

Don't expect something out of a team that they are incapable of.

Tiger- Good point, watched the game as well.

Martinez did a poor job with the bullpen. Koch, for a guy who supposedly throws 100 mph, doesn't have closer makeup. With his 'great' stuff he can't even average a strikeout per inning. I believe Koch had Jeter 1-2 and Justice 0-2 and walked both guys to start the inning. Unexcusable. He got lucky when the ump gave him a gift strike three to Posada. Martinez left him in a few batters too many once it was clear he didn't have any semblance of control.

And Mondesi dogging Soriano's 'double' in the eight inning was a perfect example of what kind of player he is. His jogging after the ball instead of running full-out was probably the difference in the game. Compare that to the ninth inning when Spencer goes all-out with a leaping grab against the wall that probably saved two runs.

Tiger, totally agree with your analysis, but for one thing.

The Jays "tend" to win these types of games agaist NY, but somehow they let this one slip away from them.

Granted that the JAYS have a hard time against the rest of the league, but usually, they play well against the yankees, and the red-sox.

I really don't know what to say about their pitching, it's been up and down since 1998 and I could care less really...but don't be surprised if the JAYS do more stuff like this.

As i've said before, with the BLUE JAYS and sports betting it's 99% capper in me and 1% fan over the last year or so.

It's the volitility of the jays that makes me stay away from them....
I hardly bet on Toronto hockey or baseball teams period because they have problems during the regular season and mess up when games mean the most. Do the Jays have the killer instinct this year?

NO, they don't...they haven't had it since 1994, and that's 7 years of rebuilding???

but hopefully management will do something about this next year..but that's what they promised us about 2 1/2 years ago.

I still don't like the fact that they got rid of Chris Michalek...they needed to get rid of Pedro Bourbon.

And in regards to Carols Delgado...he's sitting on his ass this year..where's the motivation from him to his teammates????
Or anybody...??? They say this Jays team are mostly a bunch of selfish, unmotivated players...

I totally agree.

In regards to Hoops' comment about going all out...

I've been watching the JAYS pretty much ALL season...
I have almost NEVER seen Delgado or Mondesi make leaping catches and sacrificing their bodies to make a play...

but i do give credit to shannon stewart and jose cruz jr and alex gonzalez...those kids are the unsung heroes.
