The Yankees confirmed on Thursday that pitcher Kevin Brown would start on Friday. Brown has been out since June 9 because of a lower back spasm and an intestinal parasite. "He seems to be ready to do this," manager Joe Torre told the Associated Press. Brown will be limited to around 85 pitches.

John Smoltz pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Pirates today for his 23rd save.
Although he got the job done, Smoltz seemed fatigued while pitching for the fifth time in six days off. He'll probably get tomorrow off, which could result in a save opp for Chris Reitsma.
