There is as of 8:43 PM not a drop of rain to be found. At 7:00 PM The Yankees cancelled the game.

People are calling up WFAN RADIO complaining because fans came by the train load and /or paid for parking at $10 a pop and got screwed.

Furthermore The Yankees are now falling under heavy scrutiny because they were facing Doc Halladay !

I was at Yankee Stadium when Bob Shepherd announced that the game has been cancelled on account of inclement weather.
They really meant on account of an impending loss to Doc Halladay. !!!

Yankees continue to be a weasel organization !

yanks can't ppd any game. It is all up to the umps if a pitch has been throwen it is a rule that they must wait 90 mins. if game has not started it is up to the head ump and crew they check the doppler to see if any breaks are around and how storm is moving and all major and AAA teams have doppler. then they make the call teams can say they have concern for the safety of players but the crew makes the call as a team and that will never change it is a mlb rule.

So Cal
As usual, Fletch is correct. Teams have no say over outcome. They can give their opinions for what it is worth (very litte), but the decision is made by umps. Now whether or not George has enough influence to factor into the ump's decision is an entirely different story.

I was under the assumption that up until game time, the home team makes the decision to postpone a game.

After the 1st pitch is thrown, the crew chief makes the decision.

Has this changed or am I just wrong?

In Detroit, when I was living there, they never, ever postponed a game prior to it's start. They let the people into the stadium, buy a few brews & dogs, then let the umps cancel.

Because a pitch was not throwen and crew chief either deemed filed was unsafe or that was not going to be a long enough window to get game in before next round of storm and it is a travel day. It takes 30-45 mins if team and pitcher has not warmed up yet and to get field ready so they call was made before 7 that it was not going to start.

It is not even left up to a team in college. There has to be either storms on the way or field had to have had a few hours of very heavy rain. Most of the time they will wait 1 hour if game has not started. also AL teams cannot start a inning after 1 am so they could not wait for ever and jays had a flight not long but lot goes into things on a travel night in the AL in the NL WILL MAKE YOU WAIT FOR EVER. Ground must of been wet umps are not stupid and managers and teams don't like to make up games this late in season and it is lost profit if it does not get made up a lot of lost profit from yes network to advitisers food and bev and sales at pro shop. you would freak if you saw how much food and bev pulls in for a game with the mark ups they have.

(a) The manager of the home team shall be the sole judge as to whether a game shall be started because of unsuitable weather conditions or the unfit condition of the playing field, except for the second game of a doubleheader. EXCEPTION: Any league may permanently authorize its president to suspend the application of this rule as to that league during the closing weeks of its championship season in order to assure that the championship is decided each year on its merits. When the postponement of, and possible failure to play, a game in the final series of a championship season between any two teams might affect the final standing of any club in the league, the president, on appeal from any league club, may assume the authority granted the home team manager by this rule. (b) The umpire in chief of the first game shall be the sole judge as to whether the second game of a doubleheader shall not be started because of unsuitable weather conditions or the unfit condition of the playing field. (c) The umpire in chief shall be the sole judge as to whether and when play shall be suspended during a game because of unsuitable weather conditions or the unfit condition of the playing field; as to whether and when the play shall be resumed after such suspension; and as to whether and when a game shall be terminated after such suspension. He shall not call the game until at least thirty minutes after he has suspended play. He may continue the suspension as long as he believes there is any chance to resume play. The umpire in chief shall at all times try to complete a game. His authority to resume play following one or more suspensions of as much as thirty minutes each shall be absolute and he shall terminate a game only when there appears to be no possibility of completing it.

I got this from the MLB rulebook.

I didn't realize it is officially the manager that makes the decision.

Good find E that is news to me never was that high up but i was always told umps had last call to the safty of fild but rules states differnt i know college it is umps and minors also. well if you go to weather noaa or weather .com you will see a major storm with in 30-40 mins from the bronx very heavy rain and lots of lightning. so i don't think they would of got 5 in anyone know how long it rained today in the bronx , the storm that went through was good size but not heavy rain like the one behind it.

It still has to be unsafe or the call could be put under protest and then umps over ride the call by calling mlb office , it had to have merit to it. the 30 min rule is new because i am reading a 1995 rule book and it says 90 mins.

But the other rule 3:10 is the same

i am sure on this they get a rain check for a future game or refund and if they paid parking every place i know gives you a pass for the next time you come by showing ticket and getting it stamped but do you want to wait in a line for the stamp. but they won't give a cash refund on parking that is the biggest racket there is in sports:nono:

Yanks pulled this stunt earlier this season to set up their rotation for an up-coming series.
There's no shame in their game ! Weasels that they are.

Before I left for the game there was a thunderstorm warning in The Bronx until 7:00 pm. They did have a cloudburst and that was it. Also The Yankees have installed one of the finest fields in baseball for drainage.

Oh by the way, it's still not raining !!

Were any of you actually in the Bronx? I was all over Manhattan & the Bronx & the weather was nuts.

First it would come down in buckets making visibility horrible, then it would stop, then start up again, then stop, then some sun, then rain all over again.

It was raining when that game was to begin. Try not to be so bitter next time

Oh & a little FYI, the last team to beat Halladay was these Yankees so get real, they didn't cancel in fear of facing him.

Sorry Mr. Hockey

Sorry Mr. Hockey

yeah I was in the Bronx sitting in Yankee Stadium. And I have a season package with them.

There was light rain at 7:00 PM when they cancelled. And it was truly Not enough to stop the game ! I've seen much worse. Yankees do whats convenient for them...not the fan ! And the rain stopped for hours after 7:00. And i live in The Bronx.

You are right , Yankees beat Halladay on March 31,2003. Since then Halladay beat Mussina twice and Pettite once. OUCH!

LOL..i'm not bitter...LOL... I also pointed out they pulled this stunt earlier in the season calling a game just so they could have an intact rotation for an up-coming series.

Ha ha ha..sorry, but i think they are weasels. By the way, they got Boston this weekend, i hope their rotation is what they want.

Anyway, this seems to be a moot point that is now history.
Let's get some winners.

here is an article from today's ny daily news that says that the umps were the ones who called yesterdays game.

Yank rotation still reigning

By SAM BORDEN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

The Jay's Roy Halladay signs autographs for fans as last night's game is rained out.

The Yankees' game with the Blue Jays was rained out last night and no, it didn't have anything to do with the fact that 14-game winner Roy Halladay was scheduled to pitch for Toronto.
When the Bombers called an early postponement to their June 19 game with Tampa Bay, it let them avoid using struggling pitcher Jeff Weaver against the Mets - and brought conspiracy theorists out of the woodwork.

But last night's decision was made by the umpires - the required procedure because it was the last time the Blue Jays were to play in New York this season. The umps called the game shortly before 7 p.m. and no makeup date was announced.

Joe Torre said the Yankees will simply push their rotation back a day - meaning last night's scheduled starter, Andy Pettitte, will pitch tonight against Baltimore and Roger Clemens will face the Orioles tomorrow. But another rainout - a possibility either day, according to the forecast - would set up a mouth-watering matchup Friday night: ex-Red Sox ace Clemens vs. current ace Pedro Martinez in Boston.

As things stand, David Wells will oppose Martinez, with Mike Mussina and Weaver finishing out the three-game showdown. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Pettitte will now miss the Red Sox, a team he is 12-4 against in his career.

There are several options for making up last night's game. The Yankees visit Toronto from Sept.1-4, with an off day after the opener of the series. They could play a game in Toronto that day (Sept.2) or fly back to New York and play at the Stadium.

Obviously the Yankees would prefer to get the ticket proceeds from that game, but the travel demands make that plan less desirable.
