September 13, 2002 -- YANKEE NOTES

Jason Giambi left the Yankees' clubhouse with his right wrist covered in a compression wrap to reduce swelling after Sean Douglass hit him with a 2-2 fastball in the first inning of a 7-3 win over the Orioles.

"It was starting to get stiff," Giambi said when asked why he left the game in the fifth after whiffing in the second. "It pained me to be responsible but I was."

X-rays revealed nothing more than a bruise, but Giambi likely will sit tonight.

"I will probably give him [tonight] off," Torre said. "The X-rays are good. He probably could play [tonight] but I doubt I will play him."

Giambi appeared to be in severe pain after taking the fastball off the wrist.

"Anytime you get hit in the wrist you are always concerned," said Giambi, who was hit in the back Wednesday night. "There is not a lot to [the wrist]. Luckily, I got my wrist turned the other way and it didn't hit me on the side, it hit me on the top. So it was okay. I am sure it will be stiff and we will go from there
