Yard question

i have some rocks in the front lawn next to my driveway that i want to get rid of them. my old lady wants to keep them, but i was thinking of just putting grass. question is would it be easier to fertilize and lay some seed just to grow my own grass, go the lazy route and buy some sod, or should i put wood chips and plant some flowers there??

the lady we bought the house from just had some rocks that match the rocks around the house. it doesn't look bad, but man i hate pulling out all those weeds and crap all the time.

any advice would be cool

Growing grass is easy. Laying sod is easier.

Sod will run you say $2.50/sq foot.
Seeding yourself...much cheaper. When you seed yourself, obviously you won't see results overnight. Give it a yr. and a half. And if you do reseed, do so in the fall, the seed will be able to retain more water. Wood chips is purely based on the eye of the beholder...if done correctly, they look decent. However, they should be taken up, with new tarp put down every three years. Many people think they should look good for the next decade.

dogface was 100% correct about the weeds. The weed grows from what is known as a tap root, and to dig those up, you either need to dig 6 inches below the main soil, or better yet, use weed killer. Seriously, pull a couple to the bottom, and you'll see. That tap root is nasty, and will keep on truckin'.

Sodding is easy but remember you will have to water it twice a day for at least 10 days. Seed in easy in a small area especially now that you can buy it with the seed pack in groud up cardboard and fertilizer. You will only have to water that maybe every other day.

As hogman stated, it is to late in the growing season to seed right now. If the the seed germinates and you get an extended period of hot weather, it will burn it to a crisp as the root system has not established itself yet. Wait till Labor Day and go for it then.

Dogface has the right idea for the weeds. Get a spray bottle of Roundup and spray only on the weeds you want to get rid of, not anything else, as it will kill whatever it comes in contact with.

yea ive been spraying them with round up, but man they seem to take forever to die. i pull some here and there, but today i look and there is some new ones growing. and than in some areas of the grass, there is alot growing. i need to pick up some of that fertilizer/weed killer or something. it iriatates the hell out of me.
thanks for the help guys. i'll probably do the sod thing, but who knows, w/ my old lady bitching she wants to leave it and plant flowers i may have to listen to the queen. and on another note, i just get finished painting our bedroom this light green color, looks really cool, and i leave for 1 day and i come back and she painted a spot in the corner purple.?? WTF. she wanted to paint the ceiling purple. the idea wasn't to bad, but man she picked out a way dark color. unreal. i had to go over that spot 3 times with ceiling paint. thats lesson #1 for me. dont leave paint laying around

Word to the wise if you choose seeding.....You get what you pay for..trust me..buy the best seed...anything less and you get a lot of weeds...can't go wrong with sod....but, it is costly.

i acutally was gonna spray paint a big Cubs logo in our back yard, but she wasn't to happy about that. yea, im over here at our new place by myself just cleaning up because were moving in this saturday. kicking back, drinking a few cold ones, cleaning the garage and getting ready to grill some hot dogs. all i wanna do is just relax and my wife calls and she is brining some friends over. great...just great...

on a lighter note, i think im just gonna do the sod thing for now. i may wait till next spring though or can you plant sod whenever???

and another question, whats a good fertilizer to use to get rid of all these damn weeds in the lawn. the grass looks good, but man there must be like 40 weeds out there..

Kdogg, go to whereever you buy your lawn care products and get either Weed-B-Gone for dandelions and clover if that is what the problem is or if it is crabgrass and nutgrass, you need a broadleaf weed killer. They are two different products that kill different types of weeds. You will need either a hose end sprayer or a pump type sprayer. If it is a large area, get the hose end sprayer and set it to the reccomended setting that the weed killer suggests, or if you can just spot treat, get a small pump garden sprayer. Be carefull the temperature is not to hot when you spray as some of these products will kill everything you spray if the temperature is over a certain degree, usually 90 or so.

If you decide to sod, you need to soak it daily until the roots take off and then on a pretty regular basis after that. I wouldn't plan on any major lawn renovation until this fall. You are pushing your luck at this point in the summer.

Go to home depot or some other hardware store and get the good weed killer, they have stuff that clears the ground for like a year.

Best thing to do is replace the gravel and spray the spot where your going to grow and then put down some black landscape tarps.

Don't fight the weeds, eliminate them. Pull the rocks up, lay down some black plastic (concealed), then put the rocks back down. Then go back to the store and get a refund for your weed spray.

ok another question guys.....

i also have a 40 year old tree in the back yard and 2 of its roots are kind of sticking above the ground. is there anything you can do about that or do you just leave it be???

and what do those chimpmunks eat??? those little bastards were in my flower pots digging up some stuff and i have no idea what could be in there. i thought they might be burying some stuff, but i dont see anything in there. kind of aggiating me,because they have been getting dirt all over my deck..

Been using the Scotts lawn products for three years now. I fertilize with what they tell me to use depending on the season. I fertilize with the different formulas 5 times a year (year round) and cut my grass high. Each year I have fewer weeds and a stronger thicker lawn. It takes five seconds to swing around with the spreader. A longer thicker lawn handles the heat much better and any traffic as well.

IMO sod can be as much of a pain in the ass as seeding.

The chipmunks love to eat tulip bulbs. Don't know if that is what is in there, but that might be what they are looking for.

Don't think there is anything to do about the roots. Some tree's roots are different than others depending on the variety. Some go more straight down, while others stay very close to the surface. Best thing to do is to leave it be.
