Whether or not they are female or not has no bearing on this story (to me).
When an American gets in trouble in a foreign country, I fully expect the government to help them out. Those two reporters are being held, probably illegally (by the standards of our laws, UN laws, and even North Korean laws). It is quite possible they were abducted from the Chinese side of the border to be used as a bargaining chip.
You might question their political leanings, or their career choice, but as a fellow American I can't just shrug this off. These are two AMERICANS; they are one of us. They are being held prisoner by probably the most repressive regime in the world. This isn't much different than the "Somali Pirate" hostages. Way more delicate and complex, of course, but in terms of my support for them; it is the same.
