I manage both my son's baseball teams. One team consists of 7-8 yr olds, the other 9-10 yr olds. For the older kids... any limit on the # of pitches they can throw in a game ( without being ridiculous). My 3 pitchers all have pretty good mechanics. One is coached by Steve Trout (not sure if that is a good or bad thing). Thanks.

At that age number is not really bad because they don't really throw that hard but no i mean no breaking pitches and steve should know that, fb change ups, now they should only be allowed to throw 8 innings in a week, and not on back to back days, they will get leg tired before arm will get tired and that is when you will see the ball coming low and hit infront of plate,in older 15 and up when they get tired ball will go high.

We're limited to 6 innings per week. Absolutely no curveballs. I have them throw mostly 4 seamers because their hands are so small. Two seamers will have a little break to them with no change in the pitching motion so we play around with that a little.

Thanks for the advice.

Manage 9 & 10 years olds and we have a 6 innings per week and 75 pitches per outing. Seems to work out great. We only had 1 complete game pitched last year with these restrictions.

Anytime a child boy or girl gets a chance to play a sport or just screw around in the back yard is great, not just baseball but any activity, teaches them to be with others , they learn it is ok to have fun in life, also they do not fell left out, for any child that wants to play a sport there should be a spot for that child up to hs age boy or girl or physcially challenged. as for baseball the biggest thing that made me a good hiter and used it in college as a player and a coach and even in the minors is wiffle ball. You here people say it will mess up their swing bs if you can hit a wiffle ball with the way it breaks and dips and can even make it rise or knuckle you will be a good hitter , we played in hs and in college took part of bp, and to make it even better you can go to the wiffle golf balls and hitting will really take off and so will hand eye cord.

all children should have some physical activity no matter what their skills are, none should ever be left out. and also none should ever be forced let them choose what they want to do.

And FW if you mean how much throwing, a child cannot ever throw to much it builds arm strength, just don't gas every throw, long toss, half speed to work on hitting target chest high things like that you can never hurt the arm by throwing right just stay away from curve balls, wiffle cb is ok ball does not put a strain on the elbow and shoulder tendons.

Fletch has it covered. I would add only thing. No curve balls even up to the 14 and under. They can play with the seems a little and get some action on the ball. Save those young arms and elbows.

spent many afternoons playing backyard wiffleball. We would "cork" the bats by cutting off the end, loading it with newspaper, and then duct tape it back. We would also tape up the balls a little. Mainly played homerun derby. Just played today in the backyard with my 5 year old. Trying to get those swing mechanics ironed out a bit. Finally getting him to swing hard and not turn over his right wrist.

fletch, any tips to help with the swing for a little, little kid like that who is just learning? Thanks.

FOR CHRIST SAKES BACK WHEN I WAS A KID I ONCE THREW 22 INNINGS IN A STICK BALL GAME THEN I WENT AT NIGHT AND PITCHED FOR MY LITTLE LEAGUE TEAM. I SAY THROW ALL YOU WANT AND DONT GO SPOILING THE LITTLE FAGS.THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH TODAYS YOUTHS THEY ALL HAVE FAG NAMES LIKE ZACK,TODD,BEN,TYLER,SAM,SETH, BACK IN MY DAY IF THERE WAS ONE KID WITH A FAG NAME HE GOT A BEATING.LET THE KIDS PLAY BALL AND STOP BABYING THEM OR THEY WILL QUIT BASEBALL AND RUN OFF AND BECOME A MENS FIGURE SKATER THEN YOU REALLY WILL HAVE PROBLEMS FAG SONS ON SKATES.WHEN YOU ARE YOUNG YOU HAVE A RUBBER ARM WE HAD A KID NAMED (JACK RUBBER ARM DALTON) HE WOULD PITCH FOR OUR GRAMMAR SCHOOL DURING THE DAY THEN NOT TELL THE LITTLE LEAGUE COACH AND THEN PITCH AGAIN AT NIGHT HE WAS AMAZING.

I COULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD PITCHER BUT I CONCENTRATED ON PLAYING THIRD BASE AND DONT FORGET BOYS I AM PROBABLY THE ONLY GUY IN THIS FORUM NO WAIT A MINUTE I AM THE ONLY GUY IN THIS FORUM WHO GOT A HIT OFF A REAL MAJOR LEAGUER YES BOYS BEANTOWNJIM RIPPED A HOMERUN/DOUBLE OFF THE LEGENDARY (JIM CORSI)

six-five a good drill for that is have him throw the bat and let it fly like a copter blade and just keep doing that and bat should spin like the blade, then when hitting don't call it a swing tell him to throw the bat at the ball but hold on , will see good bat speed and line drives this is a drill used in college and in the spring a and aa with lot of teams if bat does not slide across grass then you can tell what hand is being used more by the bounce of the bat or if it digs in the ground.

sorry Jim I have 5 home runs off 1 pitcher alone terry moholland 2 in college 2 in the cape and 1 in spring training, also have a ball hit in wichita 428 feet sitting in my case off of greg swindell.

You will be limited by the league bylaws depending on what sanctioned league you are playing under. From my past experience more than likely you will run into problems with the innings because of lack of pitchers, so I use to try to have everyone take a turn on the mound in practice and weed out the one's that are afraid of the ball because you will need extra pitchers if you get rain outs. My theory was to have my starter if possible go four innings and then bring in another kid to finish it up. The amount of pitches being thrown will have no bearing on the rules, at the ages your talking about expect long games with a ton of pitches and a ton of walks and passed balls. If you want the team to win I have always found that one of the key positions is to find a catcher that can actually block the ball and throw down to second, usually what kills a team is passed balls where the other rteam runs wild all day.

PRO no this was in the Jayhawk league nbc world series.

MC you are right about the catcher and the get 4 bring in 1 for 2, did lot of camps for LL and the biggest thing that made me mad were coachs telling kids to get walks , they ask me about that all the time and i say bs swing the bat and strike goes from neck to below the knee and a inch more on both sides of the plate, by sending a child up there and say get a walk teaches them nothing because most pitches will be some what out of the zone.
