Police refuse to identify where Saturday morning incident occurred

By LAWRENCE MOWER
REVIEW-JOURNAL
A man was attacked early Saturday by about 15 youths near an entrance to a parking garage at the rear of a Strip resort, police said.

A surveillance videotape of the attack shows the man being sucker punched by one young man, then being swarmed by a crowd of at least six young men, who beat him.

One of the attackers tries to kick the man in the face. The victim is able to pull away from the crowd, but he is chased and caught in the middle of a roadway, where the growing group of attackers, as if in a feeding frenzy, continues to punch, kick and stomp on him as he curls in a fetal position on the ground. One of the assailants appears to use a chain or some type of belt to whip the man.

The victim, whose name and age were not released, suffered a broken jaw and a broken collarbone, police said.

"This is truly egregious," Las Vegas police Capt. Dave O'Leary said.

He said the suspects are thought to have been coming out of a nearby movie theater when the attack occurred.

The United Artists Showcase 8 movie theaters are next to the MGM Grand on the Strip, and visitors to the cinemas frequently park at the MGM Grand.

Authorities are looking for about 15 people in their late teens or early 20s who were involved, O'Leary said.

On the videotape, most, if not all, of the attackers appear to be boys or young men, but at least one woman is seen kicking the victim before she jogs away laughing.

The videotape shows the victim keeping an eye on the crowd as it streamed past the golf cart in which he was sitting at about 2:20 a.m.

One of the young men passing by the golf cart is seen taking the man's two-way radio out of the passenger side of the vehicle, police said.

When the man gets out of the golf cart and pulls out a cell phone, another youth sneaks up behind him and starts punching him in the side of the face, sparking the melee.

Camera footage from immediately after the incident shows several vehicles with Nevada license plates speeding out of the parking garage next to where the attack occurred, O'Leary said.

In an e-mail to the media alerting them to the Monday afternoon's news conference about the attack, Las Vegas police said the incident was a robbery that had happened at the MGM.

But at the news conference, O'Leary described the location only as a "resort property on the Strip corridor."

O'Leary refused to release or confirm the name of the property "as a feeling of a good-faith gesture" to the business, he said.

He said many Strip properties work with police and provide security camera video.

In this case, he said, police wanted to maintain that relationship with the property, and the business did not want its name released. He said he would provide more details on the incident in the future.

Police also said they did not know whether the victim was a security guard at the resort or what job he was performing when he was attacked. They said the resort property did not contact police until Saturday evening.

The Review-Journal found an area at the back of the MGM at the end of Audrie Street that is identical to the area seen on the videotape.

MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said Monday night that he recently had returned to town and was unaware of the incident and unable to comment on it.

Sounds about right. Vegas breeds some nasty folks. I learned very early on to not mess with anyone who actually grew up there. Vicious bastids.

Weekend Beating Part of Local Crime Spree

Adrian Arambulo, Reporter
April 18, 2006 10:00 PM

A crime spree spanned two late nights this past weekend, and police are now looking into six different incidents to determine if they are related -- including the one caught on MGM Grand surveillance.

Las Vegas Metro Police believe there is a strong likelihood they are connected, considering the number of suspects involved, the descriptions of the young men, and the method of the crimes.

Daryle Williams has been arrested for his alleged role in the MGM Grand beating. Police believe that beating may be related to five other incidents in the valley, and there is now new surveillance video of one of the other incidents.

........................

I remember last year some old fellow resisted an armed robbery outside fancy casino in upscale suburb of Summerlin and got shot

all my many months of living in Las Vegas and I never saw any violent crime.

I even lived for several weeks down the bad side of east Fremont Street, at Eastern Rd. I called my weekly rental the "crack room" 'cause I found a broken crack pipe stuck behind the cable wire hanging down from celing.

cops said this area was No.1 for muggings in city when I was there. I walked it many times at night and saw nothing.

the much liked Terry Petropoulos, bartender at the Odyssey Lounge at this part of Fremont--all the local folks loved the guy---- was murdered just after I left.

I spoke to one fellow who got beat up. Right up Paradise road just 1/2 block from Hard Rock Casino. Some big dude strolled by him, then let him have it on side of face with massive punch/brick in hand. All he got in the robbery was a cell phone. The short dude who got hit showed me his 13 stiches and side of lower jaw smashed that pushed his teeth into jaw and would need oral surgery on it.

only time in Las Vegas I ever felt unsafe was when I strolled at dusk from downtown casino area to take pictures of the famed "Moulin Rouge" casino up Main St and down W. Bonanza Road.

after darkness fell all kinds of tough street urchins with mangled faces and huge homeless dudes came out and walked the streets and sidewalks. :scared
I practically sprinted back to Golden Nugget!

"the bunker"
was a pretty solid beatdown.....looked like one dude used a chain on his ass.....several stomping on his head....

why wouldn`t this be attempted murder?

i suspect, that when these thugs are caught, they`ll get a slap on the wrist....much like these morons that elude the police while driving a 2/3,000 pound weapon/vehicle........

no mandatory sentencing for endangering the public in a motor vehicle....child molesters getting slapped on the wrist...white collar criminals getting off relatively easy...

:wtf:

and now,the military in iraq aren`t allowed to use "israeli made" ammo...it`s insensitive

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - "Israeli-made bullets bought by the U.S. Army to plug a shortfall should be used for training only, not to fight Muslim guerrillas in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. lawmakers told Army generals on Thursday.

Since the Army has other stockpiled ammunition, “by no means, under any circumstances should a round (from Israel) be utilized,” said Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, the top Democrat on a House of Representatives Armed Services subcommittee with jurisdiction over land forces.

The Army contracted with Israel Military Industries Ltd. in December for $70 million in small-caliber ammunition. The Israeli firm was one of only two worldwide that could meet U.S. technical specifications and delivery needs, said Brig. Gen. Paul Izzo, the Army’s program executive officer for ammunition. The other was East Alton, Illinois-based Winchester Ammunition, which also received a $70 million contract.

Although the Army should not have to worry about “political correctness,” Abercrombie was making a valid point about the propaganda pitfalls of using Israeli rounds in the U.S.-declared war on terror, said Rep. Curt Weldon, the Pennsylvania Republican who chairs the subcommittee on tactical air and land forces.

“There’s a sensitivity that I think all of us recognize,” Weldon told the Army witnesses, including Maj. Gen. Buford Blount, who led the U.S. Third Infantry Division that captured Baghdad in April 2003."...

unreal....i suppose if an enemy is killed by a non-israeli bullet... they will be less dead?

dip the damned "joo"bullets in bacon fat.....

i wonder when that shipment of spitballs will be available?.... :mj01:

It's stories like this that made me wish our legal system was "an eye for an eye".

Obviously there are times where people are wrongfully convicted so we could never do that.

In cases like this though where there is irrefutable evidence, they should drag those punks in a room and have 10 guys (included the one originally assaulted) beat the shit out of him. If they used chains, use chains.

I know this will never, ever happen, but I really think this would dissuade people from a lot of violent crimes. I doubt someone would drag a person to death knowing that if they get caught they will go through the same pain and torture.

On the course!
Oh, and one thing that maybe some of the locals can verify:

It seems that the "thug life" seems enough to know and stay off the Strip. Maybe there is an understanding between the law and the "element"?

I'm guessing it wouldn't be too good for bidniz, if ma and pa from Kansas City don't wanna come to town now, cause Tyrice and Shontrell wanna crack their skulls.

I'm thinking maybe the court will put some serious time into this matter, when it it gets around to it.

Another rumor I heard was that the new Chappel(sp) movie has a scene in it where the Fugees get back together, and beat some white guy and steal his cell phone. Anyone hear about that?

Vegas is better on the big screen than real life.

That towns 15 minutes will be up soon.

Over rated IMO. Get better service at my local Dairy queen.

I remember Susan Berman telling story of her dad, Jewish mobster and former hitman Dave Berman, staring in disbelief when some guys just out of state pen drove to Las Vegas and were robbing his casino before their eyes in broad daylight!

Berman's henchmen asked him if they oughtta take out the idiots now, but Davie said no, wait until they cross the county line and all alone in the blazing desert. That's where the bodies were found, no money on them.
