And it is topping off what is proving to be a pretty bad year all the way around.

Today I had to put my dog Oprah down. She had hip dysplasia and in a matter of days it took her over and she could no longer stand up. I got her as a beaten starved stray when I first moved to Texas 8 years ago. She was the most loving and affectionate dog I have ever had and I will miss her tremendously.

That means that I went from three dogs to zero in a matter of months. Started the year with a divorce, losing custody of Maggie my yellow lab as she had a retinal disease and went completely blind. She was no longer able to deal with the wide open spaces of my yard and the other two dogs so I had to give her up to my ex. Then I have to take a frickin pay cut at work. A damn storm comes through knock down a tree and my fence and there goes Choppers the male labrador, leaving just Oprah.

When she was in the room they gave her a sedative and she put her head in my lap and stared up at me for about ten minutes, never breaking her gaze. It was very moving and I am very sad now. Then she kind of looked at me as if she was ready, like she knew........she knew how much she was loved and how it hurt me to let her go.....ultimately.....my life is less without her, but enriched to have had her. Sorry for the depth of emotions, I just felt I had to say something for her.

I feel your pain fatdaddy. I am a big time dog lover. My cocker spainel died a few years back and I cried like a baby. We had a baby Bulldog at the time and it helped take my mind off losing a great dog and friend. Now the bulldog is 5 and they tell me they do not live as long as other dogs. Approx 8-9 years. It is just hard to believe we become so attached to our pets but we do.:( People who are not dog lovers do not understand.

Anyone who has ever had a dear pet, feels your pain. It's really one of the saddest things to happen.

I know my time is coming soon, when I wil have to part with "Frankie," my 18-year old orange tabby. Frankie is like a son -- he listens and comforts, much like your Oprah did.

I purposely got another cat just like him, named Alex a few years ago. I hoped that some of Frankie will rub off onto Alex and that way I can continue the lineage. You might consider getting a dog like Oprah, who will in some way be able to give you the same comfort and compansionship. I really do think if you can foresee a death coming, you can make things a llittle easier by bringing in a new animal and hopefully it will learn some of the traits from the older animal.

When Frankie, dies, I will see him in Alex. I kow its not the same and I will feel pain. But it makes things a little easier.

Bless you for your loss.

I want to thank all of you for your very kind words. I could not have thought that I would be so deeply affected by her loss. It is very funny how sometimes we surprise ourselves everyday. As I sit here at this keyboard and try to come up with something to say......for the first time I can remember in a long time.....I am truly at a loss for words.

The people here at madjacks are some of the classiest and kindest you will ever meet. I will not soon forget the sentiments I have received from you all. I realize that some may say it was just a dog, but she was my dog and my friend.

I cannot thank you all enough......the tremendous lift I have received just from pulling up this thread and reading your replies.......thank you and God bless you all.
Very sincerely,
Cris

These guys are the best FDC, there is no doubt.

I had to get away from cats/dogs. Leaving them behind because of a move or them getting lost was too much. Had to go with fish.

Take care. I think most of us know that something good is gonna happen to you considering what you've been through.

sorry about your friend, FDC. If only people were more like dogs in their friendships and loyalties and forgiving ways.

So sorry for your loss fdc. Last year I lost a cat that I had for 16 years, basically grew up with him my whole life. I knew it was time because he couldnt even jump up on the bed anymore. But it doesnt make it any easier, he was the best pet I can every imagine owning. Makes me sad just thinking of it right now.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope it gets a little better each day.

Not many things in this day and time are 100% loyal, always in good mood and always glad to see ya. I'll take animals over people 90% of the time. Get ya another one ASAP. It will help.

Nolan Believe I have read every article of yours but the one that sticks with me most was the one bout the turtle. Remember?
