he made great money had more years left had a family could of been set more for life then he already was and his children which are set, but he and his brother who played for the clev indians dropped it all and signed up to fight for our country when he had no worries in life was killed a few hours ago in afgan. all people who inlist are great but for someone to drop a great paying pro sport and go fight for his country shows he must of really caried a lot for what he and his brother believed in, the freedom and safety of this country. not many making the bucks he did whould of droped it to go fight in a war with out being ask to go. like i said all the people who fight are special but you must admit pat and his brother had the world by the nads and did what they felt was right. well don't have all info yet but he is gone . i don't think many pro players or movie stars or singers making over a few million a year would do what pat did. just don't see it.

April 23 ? Pat Tillman, a former NFL player who swapped a glamorous football career to enlist in the U.S. Army, has been killed in action in Afghanistan, ABCNEWS has learned.
The 27-year-old former football player was killed in direct action during a firefight in Afghanistan, Pentagon sources told ABCNEWS. But there were no further details available.
A former member of the Arizona Cardinals, Tillman, along with his brother Kevin, enrolled with the U.S. Army Rangers after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Last year, the brothers were awarded an Arthur Ashe Courage Award meant for individuals whose contributions transcend sports. The award was accepted by their younger brother, Richard, while the brothers were away.
Tillman, an unrestricted free agent, spurned a $9 million, five-year offer sheet from the St. Louis Rams in 2001 to join the Army. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Tillman was an exceptional student with a 3.84 grade point average through college and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in marketing.
The Tillman family has been notified, according to a Pentagon source.

When someone posted the thread about the greatest American, I was going to post Mr. Tillman for his courage and selflessness. I believe his life and values stands for what this country should stand for. Believe in your values and act upon them. Pat Tillman will be someone who I think of for many years to come.

Weird how a person dies that you never met can have such a profound effect on a person...this news has ruined my day, literally.

One of my employee's son had part of his leg blown off, interviewed MSNNBC/Hardball a few weeks ago. Another employee's grandson was killed two weeks ago in Iraq.

Sad news! Makes me think back to my WWII history and all the athletes and movie stars that served in the midst of good careers.

this reminds me of a different time...back in ww2.....my father told me stories about the war.....talked about how much it meant to the average guys to see the jimmy stewart`s....the lee marvin`s...the ernest borgnine`s...henry fonda`s..the ted williams`enlist to help their country...to see the bob hope`s giving their time and effort to support their country...
it means something.....
now the hollywood scumbags will be falling all over themselves to do his life story.......makes me want to puke....
but this guy deserves to be honored....
at least his family will get some monetary benefit from tillman making the ultimate sacrifice...
we all feel horribly sad....but very proud of tillman......a throwback from a different era in our country....

I was just going to come in here and post how much I admire the brothers. They turned down that money and security to fight what they believe in. They refused interviews because they weren't doing it to get publicity, they did it out of selflessness. If only the world had more people like this, it would be a better place. Maybe the people on this forum who bitch and whine every day about this war can take a moment to reflect and realize the sacrifices of our country's troops and what they believe in...it's okay to have pride in this great country, at least there are some people that still do.
That guy was a true hero ... a man of honor and courage.

I agree he stepped up when many other would not think about it. But lets not forget many who did this in WWII and Korea. Ted Williams comes to mind. He at least was lucky enough to make it back
