Never said wasn't incorrect thing to say--but anyone that listen to the tape knows there was no intent-just bad choice of words--

Funny how you can have extreme intent--like the skank vs the 3 students and Sharpton and his followers all outside courthouse ranting--and when its apparent she and her Haskel attorneys fabricated for the chips--it disappears--and NOTHING done to the bitch despite multiple crimes--can't do anything in civil court either because the Haskel/client team have all to gain and nothing to lose--

--and while I got you here Edward--how were things in Colorado-:)

Prison Break

An inmate in the Pueblo County, Colorado jail who was injured during his second escape, is suing the county and several officials because the jail was not secure enough to prevent him from breaking out.

A local TV station reports Scott Anthony Gomez Jr. says he told the sheriff after his first brief escape that security was weak. But no improvements were made, so he tried it again. He says the cell doors in his maximum security wing were easy to open and he was able to loosen a tile in a shower ceiling because a guard did not check on him for an hour.

Gomez climbed through the ceiling, but then fell 40-feet while trying to scale the outside wall.

Everyone's immediate thought when hearing the word "lynching" is that of a white mob, generally, from the South, stringing up a black man.

This is simply false.

But thank you for reminding why I don't post in this part of the forum.

Nobody's putting her in jail, Nosigar. Freedom of speech is not being jeopardized. It's called competence. Making on-air jokes about lynching someone when your job is simply to cover golf is considered by most employers to be incompetent. Do you want to deny the employer's freedom of discipline? ...Christ, it's funny how you neocons forget your own values when it suits you.

2 weeks suspension is pretty kind by most estimates for such a screwup.

And for the record, Sharpton and Jackson are wankers.

Excuse me, she was actually making a statement of admiration towards Tiger. If she used the lynch word, tough, it's what came out at the spur of the moment. Why do politically inclined organizations and the media hurry to cover the story so quickly?
If minority sensibilities are so frail, then perhaps we should review where we are placing the blame.

Now if they want to fire the girl, that's their show and they can do whatever they want, but to bring it up as an offense to a group of people whose sensibilities are hurt is beyond political victimization. Now if ESPN fired Stuart Scott or Dicky V... ahhhh, that's a little different. I wouldn't mind at all.

I know you are so well edumacated that those thoughts would never cross your mind and are definitely prosaic in the most extreme, but even to have this issue come up as a topic in American current affairs is ridiculous.

And thanks for the neocon label. Makes me feel better, like I belong to something :burnout

sort of a strange circumstance that one gets suspended for offending someone that wasn`t offended....

if she`s woods` friend and no harm was intended,no offense taken, why not just a sincere public apology?.....she has no history of such statements....

for a slip of the tongue?...a stupid comment,agreed....but is retribution necessary?...

not only necessary...compulsory...

because, sharpton and friends won`t accept a public apology...they need their public pound of flesh...to reinforce their power...

`cause they`re the arbiters of our freedom of speech in all matters of race...offenses intended and unintended....

the imus fiasco just reinforced the power of these race hustlers...

and that`s the whole point of wayne`s post...

Thanks JC:

Well aware that generalizations are just that, generalizations. Not all southerners are toothless, shoeless, nascar tee shirt wearing, warloving, rubes. Nor are all attorneys ponytailed, ambulance chasing millionaires manipulated some stupid, drooling mouth-opended, jury into awarding there undeserving client kabillions of dollars for some frivolous lawsuit, as some on these boards have often directly and indirectly implied.

Wayne:

I listened to the tape and I agree her statement was not made maliciously. But you see, that is the f'ing problem. It is so ingrained in some people, I'd say most people, that many of us, don't even realize the harm it may cause others.

The word "lynching" has a certain connotation to African Americans. The same way my stereotype of southerners as uneducated, backwater rubes may carry with you. You and I both know what my statements are intended to do and for the most part are not true. Calling Jimmy Carter, Fred Thompson or even, ugh, Mitch McConnel an uneducated, backwater rube because they are from the south isn't very insulting.

It's a whole different story with "lynching" with blacks or "ovens" with jews. Whenever there is genocide involved, you can't be too calous. Another example was Marge Schott refering to Eric Davis as her 3 million dollar niggger. She didn't say it maliciously. She said that was the way her generation talked and didn't mean it to offend anyone. She is another wing nut. Jesse Jackson the same way with his Hymietown comment. Stupid man.

Dawgball:

Then what does the phrase or word "lynching" connotate? Sorry to see you run. Getting to close to the truth?

For the truth,
Eddie

first let me say that i cannot stand sharpton or jackson as much as i can't stand pat robertson & his crowd.

that said....a commentator should not use the word lynching when referring to a black person, even if it is meant as a joke.it does not make any difference if woods was offended.it should not be said.

Al:

The idea that she, without malicious intent, would naturally say, young golfers trying to get ahead on tour maybe should lynch Tiger in a back alley or something to that effect demonstrates the underlying racial mindset of many Americans. Many will say it wasn't intentional, malicious etc. No argument from me.

My point is that it shows a lot more of what is underneath many Americans thought process. That, in my opinion, is the root of our problems and is by far more dangerous. I'm not sure if we can ever erradicate this type of racism as it is so engrained in many people (black and white).

eddie...

i will agree with you that there still are still people in this country who hate people based on the color of their skin or what religion they practice. the only way this will be eradicated is by education both at home & at school . but at the same time the media should not make certain people spokesmen for the eradication of this hatred....& that is where i think many people (including myself) have problems.

as far as this commentator is concerned...i don't know anything about her to form an opinion on whether she is a racist or not.i tend to give people the benefit of the doubt to see if she will do it again.i just think she was trying to be cute.

i don't know whether the punishment was correct or not...or if this woman is a racist or not.

but based on history, a commentator cannot say on the air that a black person should be lynched or a jew should be gased or anything similar...even as a joke. surely (i know..don't call me surely) you see that....

How exactly are "liberals" rewriting history and sanitizing textbooks.....seems to me the current vice president's wife is the one doing that with her on-going ampaign recently to ban and/or rid portions of any texts that portray any negativity on the US's role in slavery and especially anything that tackles the American Indian issues......so, who is rewriting and trying to spin what.....please explain to this part-liberal, part-conservative history guy here what you mean by that.

As far as this comment, seems that she apologized and was suspended before any of us had ever even heard of this issue. If the golf channel feels she broached their quality of decency, then whats the big deal.....of course, I very much understand the frustration when the Sharpton-types come by, but it seems like the Gold Channel did this without much pressure and that it is passing over rather quickly as an issue......i dont find the usage of lynching to be acceptable, but am real open for debate about what, if any, punitive measures should be taken here....sounds like in this case it was very isolated and something she would have said had she been referring to any of the other golfers on the tour.....one can easily figure out if it was mean spirited or not, and this was not......unfortuneatly, we live in a "zero tolerance" world in practice, while in reality life is made up of so many different shades of grey.....you cant do "punishments" any more on a case by case basis, which is too bad because I am not sure this is something that warrants taking her off the air....I agreed with what happened to Imus, but this seems much different and innocent, despite the truly negative connatations of the phrase she used.

The real issue for the Golf Channel is why a comment made on a Friday was not really heard until well into the next week? If people were watching, this should have been a story over the weekend! I'd be worried about ratings share if I were them.....maybe her slip up increased their visibility and they'll get a few more viewers. :SIB

For starters, I wouldn't have even heard about this story if not for DTB posting it. So I guess it's not exactly much of a story.

Take race completely out of the question and she still screwed up on the job. I'm not even looking at this along racial lines.

It's amazing that folks like yourself are upset that a person is disciplined for screwing up at work. I just don't get it. I guess neocon wasn't the right word, you and DTB are actually much more like bleeding heart liberals in this case. In fact, I can't trust y'all anymore. I thought you had work ethic.

this woman made a stupid statement...offensive to some...obviously....but,unintentional....

nobody claims that she`s a racist...there is no prior history of racist statements..or bigotry...no one can prove malice afforethought...

this is a free country...where`s the nuance?...the context?....

so what do we do in this broad minded society of ours?...we seek retribution....sanctions....for an accidental indiscretion...of the spoken word...

when an apology would suffice...

if there`s a pattern....if the woman is a flaming racist and it`s a repeated indiscretion,by all means, lay it on her...

this reminds me of that woman in sudan...the teacher that went there to help people that needed help so desperately....her students chose to name a class teddy bear muhammad and the "muslim eddie`s" of that society wanted to kill her ..but then softened to sentence to "40 lashes" until howls from around the world brought her home....

the extent of the punishment was different, but the mindset is exactly the same....

ar...think about what slip and fall said in one of his previous dirges....

'It is not surprising that the individuals who defend a white woman from South Carolina who reference a non-white on the golf channel using the word "lynching", are from the red, fly-over states of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida (and I believe formerly, Louisiana). Ah yes, the wonderful world of the nascar, bud drinking, flagwaving, Bush voting, south. '

compare this poor woman making a public mistake with this deliberate, blanket indictment smearing a whole segment of america...

from an obvious, blatant out and out bigot......

the gall ....

Your lunacy is showing again. ....OK, I'll ask this question to you:

When was it ever OK for an interviewer to say or suggest something like this one did? Give me an example from our better valued, more freedom-loving past when a sports personality could say something like this and not take heat for it?

i agree with you about eddie's statement. he has a history on this site of stereotyping people that he doesn't agree with & he disguises it as his attempt at humor. that's unfortunate & rather shameful (i'll wait for your attack eddie).but there is a big difference between the two..she said it on a broadcast, while eddie didn't.

freedom of speech...context...nuance....

do you think that this woman simply misspoke?...or do you in your heart believe that she deliberately slurred her friend, tiger woods?.....

are there words that should be banned from the dictionary?

and who is the arbiter of such behavior?...sharpton?....jackson?....the mullahs?

what`s the difference?...

it was an accident...you can kill someone accidentally in this country and get off with a lesser sanction...

The proliferation of Zero Tolerance-like policies have sadly taken common sense out of the equation when it comes to issues like this and others....like I said in my post, its clear there was no intent here, yet, she was suspended accordingly to her networks policies....whatever happened to differing shades of gray, or as you put it "nuances."

But, dont think for a second that PC think and speech control is just the purveiw of the lefties you enjoy mocking.....as I see it there is plenty of that coming from the right over the years as well, but if you've signed your loyalty oath, then you probably cant critize that. ;)
